Power steering tank full but still turning hard. 2001 chevy venture. Any ideas


With engine running, steering turned hard right or left, can you see the fluid churn in the power steering reservoir? If not, maybe one of the power steering lines is blocked?

I just wanted to add, with some makes and models. With everything off, I remove the power steering belt. I take the return line loose from pump, aim into container, rotate the pulley by hand, see if any fluid comes out of return line? The return line should be low pressure, usually held to pump by hose clamp. The high pressure line has threaded fittings.

Power steering pump installation


Matt,
If you hear a buzzing or zinging type of sound when you turn the wheels right or left, that means there is still some air in the pump or pump return lines. To stop the noise and protect the pump, block the rear wheels, place the transmission in park, and apply the parking brake. Jack up the front tires approximately two inches from the ground, making sure they are supported with something strong under the chassis so that it doesn't fall. Loosen the power steering cap just enough to where it will stay on, yet release any remaining air from the system, start the engine, very slowly rotate the front wheels to the right then to the left, this will release any air from the pump and the pump returning lines. When you don't hear any of the buzzing sounds, that means the air was released. Turn off he engine, remove the power steering cap, you will see the small air bubbles rising to the top. If you get any more buzzing sounds from the power steering system, repeat this process adding just enough fluid recommended. I know this sounds unusual, I have worked on Dodges for 43 years and my dad the main mechanic taught me this from his experience. This will also work on many other vehicles with power steering. Hope this helps with your power steering installation.

YOU FIRST YOU NEED TO REMOVE COOLANT RECOVERY RESERVOIR. YOU NEED TO REMOVE DRIVE BELT.NOW PLACE DRAIN PAN UNDER CAR IN LINE WITH POWER STEERING PUMP.NOW SIPHON OUT MUCH POWER STEERING FLUID OUT RESERVOIR USING A SIPHON.ONCE FLUID REMOVE OUT POWER STEERING PUMP.USE A DEEP 3/8 SOCKET ABOUT 13M OR 14 M YOU NEED A SHORT EXTENSION AND A 3/8 RATCHET WRENCH.TO REMOVE POWER STEERING PUMP.TO LOOSEN BOLTS, TAKE DEEP SOCKET IN PULLEY HOLES . LOOK THROUGH POWER STEERING PULLEY HOLES ALIGN DEEP SOCKET THROUGH THE PULLEY HOLES TO THE PUMP BOLTS. LOOSEN ALL THREE BOLTS. YOU HAVE TO TURN PULLEY THREE TIMES TO REMOVE ALL THE POWER STEERING PUMP BOLTS.ONCE POWER STEERING PUMP BOLTS REMOVED.TAKE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP TO THE MACHINE SHOP.THEY WILL HAVE TO REMOVE PULLEY OFF OLD PUMP AND TRANSFER DRIVE PULLEY TO NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.NOW WHEN YOU INSTALL NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.MAKE SURE TO BUY A NEW O RING FOR THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE TO POWER STEERING PUMP. Replace power steering pump


Remove the belt, there are 3 bolts that you have to remove through the openings in the pulley. Remove the power steering lines from the hold down bracket on the left lower side of the engine then remove the return rubber hose from the steel line by removing the front right tire and splash shield. Then you can lift the pump up and out and have room to remove the pressure line.

Where do I find a diagram to change the power steering pressure line hose in my 1990 Lincoln Continental?


REMOVAL

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove sight shield.
  3. Remove module bracket.
  4. Disconnect No. 6 spark plug wire to prevent damage to wire.
  5. Remove radiator fan shroud assembly.
  6. Remove top RH isolated radiator mount bracket.
  7. Remove remote air cleaner.
  8. Remove ignition coil.
  9. Disconnect electrical connector on power steering pressure switch at steering gear.
  10. Remove pressure switch to allow for tool clearance.
  11. Remove screw at pressure switch and return line bracket.
  12. Remove anti rattle clips from power steering lines.
  13. Remove plastic strap attaching steering gear heat shield to power steering return line.
  14. Remove plastic strap attaching lines to transfer tube on the steering gear.
  15. Disconnect Electronic Vacuum Regulator (EVR) valve wire.
  16. Remove the ground wire from back of engine block.
  17. Remove pressure line fitting at power steering pump using a 5/8 inch flare nut wrench.
  18. Loosen clamp and remove return line at pump.
  19. Loosen clamps and remove return line at power steering oil cooler.
  20. Remove pressure line fitting (gold in color) at steering gear, using an 18mm open end wrench.
  21. Remove return line fitting (silver in color) at steering gear, using an 18mm open end wrench.
  22. Loosen two screws retaining power steering oil cooler to sub frame.

Power steering fluid leaking pretty good on 2005 chevy impala. not from pressure line ithink. any clues


The power steering pump is belt driven. It is on the engine where you put fluid in. There are two lines that run from the power steering pump to the power steering rack on the firewall. The fluid can leak from the pump, either of the lines or the rack itself. If you are handy you may be able to repair the problem by replacing the bad part. Wear safety glasses when looking for the leak and do not touch the fluid leak when the engine is running. The pressure is high enough to hurt you. If you ignore the problem you will eventually loose the power assist and may be unable to steer the car. Fix it now!








One line is high pressure and the other is a return line. Check them with the engine off and when you think you've found the leak staret the car and look for the leak. If it sprays like a water hose DO NOT TOUCH THE LEAK. The pressure is high enough to cause serious injury.

Loosing power stering fluid /looks like its coming from /bottom of resivor/its not coming from lines from resivor where is power steering pump 2000 concorde 4 door 3.2 engine


check you o-rings on the pressure line going into the pump . put a new one on it also check the pressure regulator nut that screws into the back of the pump see if it's tight! then check for a crack around the return hose nipple on the resevour

How do you remove the Power Steering Pump and bracket. I have taken off several bolts but it still is not letting loose. Help


3.0L (VIN 3) Engine

Power steering pump mounting detail (3.0L engine)

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. The belt does not have to be removed from the engine.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness connector to the oxygen sensor which is accessible through the oxygen sensor wiring harness grommet in the vehicle floor pan.
  5. Remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and remove all exhaust system hangers and isolators from the exhaust system brackets. Move exhaust system out of the way as far rearward and to the left as possible to provide access to the power steering pump.
  6. Place a drain pan under the power steering pump. Remove the power steering fluid return line hose on the front suspension cradle. Allow the fluid to drain from the pump and hose.
  7. Remove the accessory drive belt splash shield.
  8. Disconnect the power steering remote reservoir supply hose from the fitting on the power steering pump. Allow fluid to drain from the hose.
  9. Remove power steering fluid pressure line from the power steering pump and drain any excess power steering fluid.
  10. Remove the power steering fluid return hose from the power steering pump.
  11. Remove the rear support bracket mounted behind the power steering pump to the engine block.
  12. Remove the 2 mounting bolts that secure the pump to the alternator/power steering pump and belt tensioner mounting bracket.
  13. Remove the power steering pump and pulley assembly out from the vehicle. Transfer all required parts from the pump to the new replacement pump before installation.
To install:
  1. Position the front of the power steering pump up onto the mounting bracket. Torque the 2 power steering pump-to-mounting bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  2. Install the rear power steering pump-to-engine block support bracket. Torque the 2 support bracket mounting bolts to 40ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Install the nut to the mounting stud behind the pump and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  3. Install the high pressure fluid line to the pump output fitting. Torque the high pressure line-to-power steering pump fitting to 275 inch lbs. (31 Nm). Be sure to inspect the pressure line O-ring for any damage before connecting the pressure line to the steering pump.
  4. Install the low pressure power steering fluid hose to the power steering pump low pressure fitting. Be sure the hose clamps are properly reinstalled and hoses are clear of the accessory drive belts.
  5. Install the accessory drive belt.
  6. Install the hose on the power steering fluid return line on the front suspension cradle. Be sure the hose clamps and heat shield tubes are correctly reinstalled.
  7. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Install the hangers and isolators onto the exhaust system brackets. torque the nuts and bolts to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
  8. Reconnect the wiring harness connectors to the oxygen sensor. Install the wiring harness grommet into the vehicle floor pan.
  9. Install the accessory drive belt splash shield.
  10. Remove the drain pan and lower the vehicle.
  11. Refill the power steering pump reservoir with the correct amount of clean power steering fluid.
  12. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Bleed the power steering system.
  13. Run the engine and check the system for leaks and proper steering operation.

3.3L (VIN R) & 3.8L (VIN L) Engines

NEED DIAGRAM FOR POWER STEERING SYSTEM


There is usually no diagram for the power steering on a vehicle. On power steering you have a pressure line and a low pressure return line. The pump is located on the front of the engine and has a line that is bolted into it, this is the pressure line coming out going to the steering gearbox where it is bolted in also. The other line has a clamp holding it in place, this is the low pressure return line coming back from the gearbox. If the gearbox is the rack and pinion steering type then you may have a couple of extra high pressure lines on it to operate the rack portion of the steering. Good Luck, RAC
