Question about 1997 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

I have a 97 gmc sonoma and replaced the fuel pump and have no power now to pump. I found the test wire on truck and ran a test through the relay and worked, but pump still does not work. I have changed out the pump 3 times.

It really helps if you post which engine you have and the 8th VIN digit. I ASSUME its a V6??? You should have 12 volts for 2 seconds on the gray wire (at the pump) when you turn the key on, If not, check the ECM/BATT fuse #9 20 amps, in the dash fuse panel. IF you do have power, then the relay is working and that is ok, If it does have power to the gray wire, then shuts off after 2 seconds thats normal. NOW while its running the fuel pump gets power THROUGH the OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. So get it running with your test wire, then disconnect your test wire. If it stalls out, then the oil pressure switch is either bad or disconnected.

It is a 2.2 engine and there is no power going to the pump without the test wire and I have checked all the fuses and there ok. Even with test wire the pump does not run.

OK, . I misread your post. I thought you wrote that the pump DID work when power to the test wire. SO why was pump replaced....It always helps to give the complete history of your problem. OK now you need to check for power at the pump GRAY WIRE with power on your test wire. You should have power.(check at the pump plug)..if not then there is a break in the wire between the pump and the relay. If you do have power on the gray wire, now check for power on the BLACK wire. IF you have power there (you should not) you have a bad ground, (if no power, then ground is good, check with a meter) and will need to check where it bolts onto the frame. which is near left rear corner of frame. If the pump has POWER and GROUND and it does not work, then the pump is BAD.

ECM BATT fuse #9 is fuel pump, make sure that BOTH sides on the fuse are HOT.

Fuel pump will not come on 1996 gmc sonoma 4.3

Well that is the correct action of the pump relay. The computer grounds the pump relay for a couple of seconds to prime the pump then the oil pressure switch provides power once the engine starts.
You should be able to jumper the relay and power the pump as much as you want to test the circuit.

97 sonoma only runs on starter fluid

if it ran fine before this happened then check the fuel pump relay first. it may have shorted out when jumped off, or when battery was replaced

2003 sonoma, 4.3. ran fine, one morning tried to start, heard a pop" not in the motor" would turn over but not start, fuel pump made no sound in "on" postion or when starter was bumped....

There is nothing in the circuit after the relay, however, hearing the relay doesn't mean the power is available to run the pump, as the pump circuit is separate from the relay solenoid. The pump needs power from the 20 amp "ECM B" fuse. If you probe the relay socket with a test light, there should be 2 hot terminals--one from the PCM and one from the ECM B fuse. See diagram below.

If the power is there, are you sure it's the fuel pump relay that you hear clicking? If there are other relays in the box, it may be one of them that's coming on. Try swapping the pump relay with another one. Let me know if you get stuck or have more questions.

I have a 97 gmc sonoma 2.2 engine and have put three fuel pumps in and can not get power to it. I ran a test wire to pump and had power but the pump still does not work.

check the ground for the fuel pump. a wire with an eye connector is bolted to the left frame rail towards the back of the truck. You have to lay on your back and slide under the truck to see it. Let me know if this solves your problem. or just run a new ground wire to the pump.

The ground wire for the fuel pump is separate from the wire harness and may need to be re-grounded. (Common thing to happen) The only other thing you can do is try replacing the the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump it self if it's weak. Believe the fuel pressure for your TBI system is 13 to 14.5 PSI to have your engine run 100%.
Good luck and recheck you wire harness and ground lead wire. Thank you for using Fixya
