Question about Ford Escape

1 Answer

Vehicle is stuck in reverse, but with e-brake released will roll freely. Manual button on top of steering column will allow the shifter lever to move but will not drop into any of the other gears and is still stuck upon releasing the release button on top of the steering column of this year. There is a slight humming noise coming from just below the intake while the key is in the ignition however i dont believe this has anything to do with the trans being stuck. The shifter cable itself where i can touch it has about 1 - 1 1/2' of play (more than usual) ..Im 90% positive it is the shifter cable and am looking for a diagram to see how difficult it would be to do the job. It looks simple from the end of the cable all the way up to the firewall but am looking for a diagram to see whats between the firewall and the shifter lever itself. Thats probably gonna be the hardest part i think but just need to see it so i can track down everything and know what i need to do

1999 GMC Sierra stuck in drive. What do I do?

First off, set the parking brake, raise vehicle so you can get under it. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission and manually move the shift lever to park. Then try moving the shift mechanism inside the car to park and then through each gear (engine off of course). See if the mechanism sticks, if so, probably a broken tab on the locking mechanism for the shift lever in the steering column. If it moves freely, try the lever on the transmission back and forth through the gear range to see if it sticks. If it sticks, or you can't initially move it by hand, you have a transmission problem that requires trained individuals to fix. If it moves freely also, try lubing the cable with silicone spray at all contact points, especially where it enters and exits any cable sheathing. (spray into sheathing well) If both move freely independent of each other, it may just have been in a bind, put both shifter and tranny lever in park and reattach the shift cable, Then try the gear range again from inside the vehicle.

Car wont start and rolls backwards even though it apears to be in park

Sounds like the shifter is stuck in reverse or drive since it will roll.
I would set the parking brake and have someone watch the shift lever on the transmission to see if it and the shifter inside is still connected.

My 2005 Pacifica will not disengage from park and the check engine, brake and anti-skid warning lights are all on

SHIFTER LOCKED IN PLACE

  1. Remove the instrument panel cover below the steering column, then remove the steering column shrouds to gain access to the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid. The solenoid is part of the interlock cable assembly.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector from the rear of the BTSI solenoid.
  3. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. With the brakes applied, try moving the shifter out of the PARK position.
    • If the lever now moves freely in and out of PARK, perform the Circuit Test below.
    • If the shift lever still does not move from the PARK position, remove the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever assembly. If the shift lever now moves freely in and out of the park position, the BTSI solenoid is faulty and the interlock cable must be replaced. If the shift lever still does not move from the park position, the problem is in the shift lever assembly or the ignition interlock cassette

2006 Chrysler Pacifica- Will not shift out of Park, the steering wheel isn't locked, and the brake is releasing as it should. What else could it be?

Can't get out Park, starts ok, tried the manuel thing pressing
the pink release button, nothing. Had the car towed but
they had to hoist it on a truck. Was there a recall for this?

I am stuck in park and cant engage drive. my fluid levels are normal. engine is on. footbrake is depressed. steering lock is disengaged. ticking noise in steering column when button on gear shifter is...

You need to have the dealer check the inter lock solenoid on the shifter cable,
It is powered by the ignition and brake light switch, pushing the brake releases the solenoid and allows you to move shifter.

Automatic gearshift stuck in park

The release for the shifter is tied to the brake lites, check to see if the brake lights work, if they don't then test the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal, if it lights a test lite when you press the brake it is ok, in that case you need to check the little solenoid that pulls the cable to unlock the shifter, it is bolted to the top of the steering column, in order to get at it you will have to unbolt the column and drop it dow.
