Question about 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

I have a 2005 Malibu V6 LS. Whenever I fill the tank with fuel(completely full) the engine light comes on and stays on for a couple of days. This causes problems with my remote starter - it doesn't work when the engine light is on. The remote locks still work but if I press the remote starter all it does not start the car. I've done it and when I get to the car the fan is running but the car is not. Also my gas gauge is very erratic and this is a fairly recent event. I have almost no fuel in my car and this morning the gas gauge says full. After a 20 minute drive the gauge dropped to E and the light came on. Should I just replace the whole fuel tank? Thanks in advance for your suggestions - they are appreciated..

Your car has a fuel level sensor on the fuel pump which is in the gas tank that is going bad this makes your engine light come on also makes your gas gauge read faulty, I think you can buy the fuel level sensor seperate from the fuel pump but i am not for sure my wifes car does the same thing i just havent got around to fixing it yet but when i do i will repost and et you know.

Gas gauge indicator goes to empty when full

sounds like you may have a bad fuel level sender problem. as for the check engine light coming on and storing a fault code that is a separate issue.

When we fill our tank on our 2005 Chev Malibu and take of , the gauge will flunctuate up and down showing low fuel level and warning light comes on and engine light comes on , right now it's showing...

If it seems steadier with some certain level of fuel in the tank, then a section of your level sender has failed; if it doesn't, then one or the other end of the variable resistor is no longer making solid contact.

In either case, you probably need a new level sender which is located in the fuel tank and that may have to be removed in some vehicles for access.

Some vehicles the sender can be replaced without removal of the tank through an access panel under the floor of the trunk or under the back seat, depending on where the tank is located.

As I do in most cases whether you like to DIY or have repairs done, having a copy of a service manual on hand costs $20-25 US and they can be had on line or at auto parts stores.

I prefer Haynes:

GMC envoy after I filled gas tank the low fuel light came on and as I was driving it would go off than come back on after a few miles the check engine light come on stayed on and the low fuel light still...

You will need to replace the fuel level sensor which is in the fuel tank. They have a lot of problems because the metal fingers on the sensor wear off and gives you the incorrect readings. This will also cause the check engine light to come on.You will probably have a level sensor code. This will be a lot easier if the fuel level is down to about a quarter tank or less. Also you should be able to get just the level sensor and not have to get the complete fuel pump module.Good luck.
