Question about 1987 Ford F 150

Have 1987 f 150 truck, with v8 and two wheel drive. has burnt out four starter solenoids. Starter is new. Why am I having solenoid problem?

starter relay sounds like to me. or bad ignition switch but im leaning twards the relay, sounds burnt out to me.

Van won't start. Only have clicking noise. Have a new battery and had the starter checked.


I know you had the starter tested but i still thing you have one of two things going on here, first acid damage to the Positive battery cable at the battery, if this is present you will notice the outside of the cable seems swelled yo under the red insulator, this causes low voltage, enough to click the starter solenoid but not enough to turn the starter motor. The other problem is burnt contact inside the starter solenoid itself, this problem will cause a clicking noise from the solenoid with no starter engagement, it very common. The starter solenoid is near the battery just follow the Positive cable from the battery to it, carefully jumper across it, does the starter engage? Here is a picture of the starter solenoid.

1986 camaro v8 tunedport will not start wipers lights etc work brand new battery.i get no crank at all. neutral safty switch mabe??what do you think????


if you use a test light and check for voltage on the big wire at the starter this will tell you that the wiring from the battery to the starter is good.now check the small wire at the starter while someone tries to start the car you should have power to that wire.if you do then the wiring from the ignition switch to the starter terminal and everything in between is good.the problem is the starter solenoid or the starter.its a good idea to replace the starter as a new solenoid comes with it as apposed to changing only the solenoid and the starter goes bad shortly after.if you don`t have power to the terminal then check the neutral safety switch.

Why isnt my ignition coil getting power?when i turn try to turn on the truck it sounds like it is wanting to crank but it will not.


Most likely your ignition coil is fine. It sounds like you have a bad starter solenoid. On some cars the solenoid is mounted on the side of the starter motor, and on others it's integral to the starter. On a front-wheel drive Toyota, it is on top of the starter motor and has replaceable contacts.

In all cases, FIRST DISCONNECT THE GROUND (negative battery terminal on newer cars) BEFORE WORKING ON THE STARTER!

Solution for a Toyota is to replace the contacts. For cars with an external solenoid, replace the solenoid. For cars with an integral solenoid, replace the starter assembly.

Need wiring diagram for a 1997 ford f 150 p/u 4wd


The field wire to the starter has a small eyelet connector that connects to the small terminal on the starter solenoid (sometimes marked "S").

All other wires have a large eyelet connector and they are all connected together with the battery cable to the large terminal on the starter solenoid (sometimes marked "BAT").

Sometimes the field wire to the starter is a push on type connector, and there would only be one obvious terminal on the starter solenoid that it could be connected to.

1987 bronco will not start


Ford used alot of fuseable links, mostly around starter selenoid, look around for them and everyone you find try pulling them apart if there bad or burnt they will pull apart and there is your problem. If you don't find one burnt, than its got to be in the wire comming from the switch, heck there might be one of them fuseable links in that wire too.I never had to go that far to find a burnt one it was always around the selenoid or starter.

Starter problems


You do not replace the solenoid, you just have to replace the affected parts. What you need to replace are the 2 copper contacts, and the solenoid plunger. After removing the starter, remove the 3 8 mm bolts at the top of the solenoid housing. Remove the metal cap, and extract the solenoid plunger. Loosen & discard the 2 burnt contacts, and reassemble, refit a new plunger and bolt it all back together. Get the contacts and the solenoid plunger at a Toyota dealer.
