Question about 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

I am having the same issue with my anti-theft device in my 2003 Alero. Last year it stopped running and would not turn-over. $400 later, Brakemax said they just had to reset the anti-theft device. oK, so then it has run fine until last week when it left me at the mall, again, not starting. Towed it to mechanic..same damn thing but this time he went ahead and ripped it out completely and it ran perfect...until today. Now I do not have the anti-theft device in the car but doing the same thing as before...will not start and security light blinks??????? HELP!!!!!

The shop that told you they ripped it out only ripped you off unless they removed some aftermarket alarm system i,m a gm mechanic and if you remove the factory anti-theft on a 2003 olds alero it will not run ever again until re-installed make sure your battery is charged good turn igntion switch to run position but do not try to start security light should be flashing let car sit with switch on and light flashing for ten minutes light should stop flashing now start your car this is how to reset anti-theft was that worth $400.00 and again why let a bussiness named brakemax look at a no start condition keep on and you will be BROKE to the max HOPE THIS HELPS AND STAY AWAY FROM THEM YOUR FRIEND @ HELPMAX

I had this problem on my 2003 Alero and the solution was a new ignition switch.

How to reset anti-theft on a 2000 alero

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

It became only while the car was idling, now it's anytime, anywhere, and never on a consistent basis. The engine simply dies, turns itself off. When it happens, the check gauges light comes on. Nothing...

is your stereo the OEM (factory original) model? Does the car have a factory-installed anti-theft system? If the answer to both is Yes, you may have a logic conflict since many anti-theft systems go to and through the car's stereo. If you still have the original owner's manual, check the section on anti-theft or security systems. It may list a reset procedure that returns the system to factory defaults. If you have an aftermarket anti-theft system, you may have to disable it until troubleshooting and repair processes have been accomplished. Incidentally, by the car sitting without a battery for five years, all E-prom programming may have been degraded or lost. As for the volume increasing, some GM/Delco radios have a volume compensation feature that increases volume levels as speed increases.

Sounds like your anti theft security, first relearn the key. Insert key in the key switch and turn key without starting.Leave key this position for 10 minutes and then turn key off for 2 minutes.Do this 3 times.Try this and reply if it worked for you.

1997 cadillac deville delagance - anti theft device

I've got a 97 deville d'elegance that has issues similar to these. Last year the red anti-theft light came on and the car wouldn't start-took it to the dealership and they replaced the PCM? (the main brain for the system) for $900...the guy told us the wiring was so corroded he didn't want to mess with it much. Today the message started flashing on the dash that says "anti-theft problem/ car may not restart" but it still turned over in the driveway a couple times so I am hoping I can reset it. The wiring system is jacked and will probably need to replace the wiring harness completely. Doubt its worth it. Not a secure feeling with 2 babies in the back seat in the middle of winter....

99 alero turns over fine fires and runs for 5

Is your security light flashing when it does this? If so, it is going into anti theft mode. Do you have the correct key for the car? Not an aftermarket one either.

Electrical issues

Ignition switches on Aleros are notorious for going bad and causing the exact problem you describe. The next time it happens, try turning the ignition key back and forth slightly. If everything starts working again, then have the ignition switch replaced.
