When the check engine light comes on this can be caused by a number of things.

Your car has an onboard chip (ECU) that records the fault codes generated by various sensors on the engine. When a fault is detected by one of these sensors it sets off the check engine light.

The only way to determine the cause of this light is to have the cars ECU (engine control unit) scanned with diagnostic software.

Luckily Autozone will do this for free. The error codes stored in the ECU will be picked up by the scan and will indicate where the fault lies and point towards the cause of the orange light.

Please do leave a vote for the solution. Thanks.

1998 Corolla. Engine light is on, code PO420. Just got a tune up.

Hi Thomas,
Open the bonnet and look for the diagnostic socket, it has 'Diagnostic' imprinted on the lid....Open it and inside the cover you'll see a small directory...Make a bridge and connect 'T' to E1....Turn on the ignition and then count the number of flashes which are displayed by the engine check light. (that's the orange light showing an engine). Once you have that let me know and we'll identify the fault. As the engine has just been tuned, have a look at the air cleaner housing and make sure that the air temperature sensor has been connected....Looking from in front of the car the air cleaner is on your right hand side and the sensor is fitted on the back about half way down. Check visually for any other disconnected sensors which may have been overlooked.

1998 Toy Corolla Air Bag Light keeps flashing

take it to another dealer, in most cases its just a poor connection, poor contact in one of the pin connectors, air bag wiring is very sensative, one poor pin connection does not allways mean that the harness needs to be replaced, it sounds like they dont want to take the time to pinpoint the problem.

1998 toyota corolla shakes before 2 rpm, check engine lights up

Not sure what is causing it, but it sounds like you're running on 3 cyllinders. Check plugs, wires, timing . timing belt may have jumped, bad injector, low fuel pressure.

Orange check engine light fpr 2005 toyota corolla

An orange check engine light means there is an electronic failure in the engine control system. It could be anything from a loose fuel cap, to a bad sensor on the engine. It is not an emergency, but you should get it checked out. A red engine light is an emergency and requires you to immediately stop the car. Yellow is a warning.

Check engine light staying on

No,  the check engine lamp will only come on when there is a problem in engine management system, it needs to be checked with an OBDII scan tool to find the problem causing the check engine lamp to come on.
