Question about 1988 Mazda 929

How do i get off the ignition lock cylinder? its riveted and i cant figure how to get it off... once i take it off its going to be shot i need a new one but i cant go to a junk yard unless i can figure how to get one off then on without damage to the cylinders bracket

Sounds like your trying to undo the wrong bit . look deeper or closer . you dont have to drill rivets !!!

    They are a headless bolt ! You'll need a punch and hammer or some small sized pointy ended vice grips to remove them! They have a bolt head on them when new but after the bolt is tightened the end is broken off to make it difficult for car thieves! After removing about 5 I can vouch for them being a pain to undo but very straight forward! Hope it helps ! And yes! You can drill them out too !

How can I remove the ignition lock and cylinder from the steering column?


It depends on vehicle make , model an year . Some you need to take turn signal switch out an take the bolt out that holds the lock cylinder in . Others you need to have key in the lock cylinder then turn to the start position then on the cylinder barrel there is a hole you stick a pin in to release the lock cylinder . It depends .

or the anti-theft bolts confusing you , the FSM covers all that
why not read that first. then ask questions.

to make cars not easy to seal they make it like this,
90 to now.
it needs to be removed the whole assembly.
anti theft bolts,off, , assmbly off, may take steering wheel off too.
the hand to lock smith (just did a 91) and he
uses special smith drift pins to drive the hidden (backside away from thieves, internal lock pin, he tumbler comes out or he drills it out.
then a new pin, and holding new tumbler, and then test it , ok ,
the reversses all above.
the fsm covers this all step by step, why must you avoid books.

Hi i have a 1997 grand prix the keys where lost so i got a new ignition switch but can not remove the old key cylinder because i dont have the keys to turn it in the start position to release the old...

Yes it will work that way. Just drill out the retaining clip in the ignition switch that holds the lock cylinder in place. Be care ful with the switch. The new lock will slide right in with key in start position. If it has a rectangular looking metal pin securing it, drill into the plastic part of the switch with a 5/32 drill bit about 1/2 inch back toward the lock cylinder to take out the pop rivet holding the spring loaded pin mechanism in place. The spring comes out and push the pin down with a flatblade and pull lock out......Mike

Can not find the release spot for the ignition lock cylinder. I was told to try a safety pin, but cant figure how it fits in the equation. from what i can see the housing totally covers the ignition.


From what i gather you are trying ot remove the ignition cylinder fro mteh lock housing. If this is the case you will need to drill a small 3/16 hole into the ignition cylinder. then you will be able to depress the lock detention spring that holds the lock in the ignition cylinder. you should be able to get a free image of where to drill.

I have a 97 ford explorer XLT and i lost my only key so it has been sitting for months, the home owners association in my old neighborhood says they are about to tow it, so my question is how can i rig it...


you wont need the wiring,finish poping the lock, where the key goes,remove it, once its removed you will use a screw driver to turn the ignition switch, the way it works is the cylinder that you need to break and remove turns wheel that turn the electrcal switch that starts it, your elimanated the key and using a screw driver instead so no wiring needed, hears a picture to show you what im talking about.the arm at the end turns the switch,your going to remove the lock and use a screw driver,d0d4b74.jpg

I have 1999 lexus ls470 -- same problem -- ignition switch


Its usually NOT the lock cylinder on the 470s, its usually the housing. The cylinder is on the dash and points towards the engine. Behind the plastic dash panel (once removed) you will see it in fact sticks in an aluminum tube that goes down 2 or 3 inches, then makes 2 turns, left to attatch to the steering column, and right to attatch to the actual ignition switch. The gear and rod assembly that the cylinder attatches to that allows it to rotate the switch usually shatters in the middle and the key starts freewheeling because there is no longer any attatchment to any of the gears or springs or click points that youd usually feel as the rotational resistance. UNFORTUNATELY this is not a 5 minute job (If it was, cars would be a breeze to steal!). Youll need at least a lock cylinder housing (dealer stock em, they break all the tyme), and IF your cylinder is undamaged, change the housing (it bolts to the steering column and extends from column towards center console area where the ignition SWITCH is actually located). If your cylinder is damaged or the housing is so shredded you cant remove the lock cylinder by normal means...then youll also need the cylinder...and it will have to be recoded to the vehicle so the anti theft will allow the new keys/cylinder to start the car. If your old cylinder and keys are intact, then transfer them to the new housing and car wont even know it happened and should start up and work as normal. Some can be removed intact, some cant...depends on how yours broke.

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04. NOTE: KEYS INCLUDED WITH NEW IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE CUT FOR THE IGNITION ONLY. IN ORDER FOR THE KEYS TO FUNCTION IN THE DOOR LOCKS, THE KEYS MUST BE CUT TO THE DOOR CODE OF THE ORIGINAL LOCKSET. THE KEY CODE WILL CHANGE UPON INSTALLATION OF THE REPLACEMENT LOCK CYLINDER (FIGURE 1).

  2. Disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).

  5. Verify the vehicle will now start using both keys.

  5. Repeat this process for additional key programming. NOTE: THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE NOTED FOR THE PART NUMBER BLOCK:
    • Part Number suffix will match center character in key code

    • Logo on key is Mercury for Mystique and Cougar models

OK. Now I have come across this myself and have done the following to fix it. First you need to know if the power door lock actuator is bad or not. If the driver door locks and unlocks with the inner driver door main control switch then it is not bad. If not then try to replace this component. To do this you will need to remove the door panel. It is not that hard. Many tutorials online that can help with this. It is easier then you think. Pull back the inner water seal from the door frame to gain access to the inner working of the door. You will need to remove the window track that is in front of the actuator to remove it easily. If not then you will have a very hard time trying to figure out how to get it out. There is a bolt that hold the bottom half on that needs to be removed. It comes out and re installs very easily. Disconnect the wiring from the actuator before you try to remove it. You will need to remove the rivet located on the outside of the door that holds the actuator in place. Drill this one out. This needs to be removed so the old actuator can be removed and you can install a new one. This rivet is heavy duty is going to be 1/4" You must not use a nut an bolt or a plastic rivet to reinstall the new actuator for the nut an bolt can come loose and cause failure and the plastic one can break very easily due to the power that is exerted by the actuator. You will have to get a heavy duty rivet gun for this as well for the standard ones are too small. They can be had at Harbor Freight for like $20.00 and comes with all the different size rivets too. To re install the new actuator just reverse the process. If this does not fix it then the problem lies with the door cylinder contact switch. This switch is mounted on the Keyed door cylinder and is connected to the power door lock actuator. It sends a signal to the actuator to lock or unlock when you turn the key. It also controls all the the other doors as well. I am not certain how much this is but I do know it can be purchased at most auto parts stores. I have also found that the door latch receiver mechanism can go bad too. The key will lock the driver side door but wont unlock the driver side door. The only way to open the door was to go to the other side or the rear driver side and use the inner door lever. This can be a costly fix and is not easy to replace by yourself. It is very difficult to remove and can be a lengthy job at that if you are not to familiar with these types of assemblies. If you are not careful you can also break the inner door handle by pulling too hard and that is not cheap to replace either. If you do not want to try to do this yourself then let someone who knows how to do it do it for you. It can be a very aggravating job if you are not used to it. If your key is not turning in either direction on any of the locks then the tumblers are jammed and need to be lubed up to operate properly. This is very easy to do and won't take much time. To remove the key lock from the door you need to remove the lock ring on the cylinder to disengage the door lock mechanism and then pull the flex plate that holds the lock in the door. After that insert your key to see if the tumbler slides are moving freely. If not then spray it with an all purpose oil or grease so you can loosen up the tumblers slides. They should be visible on the underside of the lock. Work the key in an out slowly till you see all the slides move easily and watch to make sure that they go back in to place when you remove the key. That's all there is to it. If any of the tumbler slides are damaged then you need to take it to a lock smith and have him replace the bad slides. Should not cost that much and will save you some money as well instead of paying for a new keyed lock which will also change your key to that door and will not work in the other ones.
