If you have the owner's manual, it should tell you. Or look on the dipstick, it may say something like "Check warm in Park". Usually, with the car warmed up, park on a level surface, put it in Park with the engine running (set the parking brake, block the wheels) and then check it.
Do not overfill! If it is too full, drain some out, or you will damage the transmission.
I assume you know where your transmission dipstick is? The tube is about 3/4 inch in diameter, the handle is usually near the firewall. (This is not the engine oil dipstick.)

I don't know where you get your info from, but the 2005 cobalt does not have a dipstick. I know this for a fact.

  • dale blankenship Aug 31, 2010

Well, you could have shared that fact to begin with. I don't own an '05 Cobalt, I was just sharing my experience with every vehicle I've ever owned with an automatic transmission (eight, to date, ranging from 1965 Buick to 2007 Dakota). The only difference in all of them is that the older vehicles called for checking the level in Drive rather than Park.
Check with your Chevy dealer if the owner's manual does not tell you. It has to have some way to check the level. If you don't want to buy a service manual, check your local library, they may have one you can borrow.

there is a small check plug above the tranny pan on the passenger side.kinda small but look close. it will more to the front on one corner. they say you should fill until it drips out, not streams out. the car really needs to be level. hope that helps.

Where is transmission dipstick Chevy cobalt 2005

according to wiki.answers.com
"Chevy Cobalt has a sealed Automatic Transmission... no dip stick. Probably best to take it in to get service by trans shop if you think it needs changing or re-filling."
Or
"There actually isn't one. It's a sealed system. There is a cap to fill the transmission directly ontop of the transmission. If you need to check the level, lift the car1.gif in the air and there is a 11mm plug on the bottom of the transmission, With the car running (WARNING: THE CAR MUST REMAIN RUNNING WHILE PLUG IS OUT!!!!) take the plug out, the fluid should trickle out of the hole. If no fluid comes out add fluid. AGAIN DONT SHUT THE CAR OFF WHILE IT IS RUNNING OR ELSE FLUID WILL POUR OUT!"

Had an oil change about a month ago and about 5 weeks later motor is gone. No oil light came on, no oil leaks

WELL NO OIL LEAKS.WARRANTY MIGHT COVER IT BUT YOU NEED TO SHOW ALL OIL CHANGE RECEIPTS.ALSO YOU HAVE TO USE GM MOTOR OIL LIKE 5W - 30 VALVOLINE USE GM OIL FILTERS.THEY WILL CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU BEEN KEEPING UP WITH SERVICE MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE SCHEDULES.CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL ON DIP STICK SHOULD BE AT FULL MARK LINE. THE CHEVY COBALT LS LT LTZ 2.2 ENGINE HOLDS 5.0 QUARTS OF OIL WITH NEW FILTER AND CHEVY COBALT SS SC HOLDS 6.0 QUARTS WITH NEW FILTER.IF OIL LEVEL LOOK OKAY.CHECK ON INTERNET FOR ANY RECALLS OR ANY TROUBLE WITH EARLY OIL PUMP FAILURE.
