Question about 1997 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

I have a 97 Bonneville, at idle, after it warms up it will surge, up to 1500 to 2000 rpms then drop to 500 and surge back up. It continues to do this until it stalls. I replaced the IAC and it seemed better but mildly at best. I then found that if I clean the Mass air flow sensor it may help and it did but still not quite there. It is less significant bet when I put the car in gear it has a hard time holding RPM unless I give ti gas. the car only has 200,000 on I plan to get at least a 100,000 more. Any help?

Check the automatic idle control valve. It just may need a cleaning. The AIC module may be bad too.

wow ..you have checked about everything .. the code is telling you that cylinder 3 is mis firing ... you agree that it is missing ... there has to be a problem with that cylinder .. i would check and recheck the ignition wire, plug, distributer cap, coil associated with that cylinder .. here is a couple of URLs that may or may not shed some light ..

I would inspect the connecter and wires for the #3 cylinder fuel injector for damage.

Try and clean the throttle body. Carbon will gum up on the blade and the vaccume passages, which will cause a surge and stall.

97 expedition 5.4 doesnt idle very good

Surging idle is usually caused by vacuum leaks. Ford 5.4L engines are notorious for the PCV hose elbow leaking back behind the throttle body.

The PCV tube goes from the right (passenger) side valve cover and loops around behind the valve body. Inspect this hose on BOTH ends.

Surge in idle when brakes applied or after driving..

block off vacuum hose to brake booster and see if idle returns to normal if it does you need new brake booster has hole in diaphram internally some times slight hissing noise is evident in cab when pressing brake pedal to section where engine surges or idles high. also check for fuel leaks from hoses if you can smell fuel in engine bay while running and engine warm some leaks only leak while running and hot
