SOURCE: where is the fuel filter

filter is just forward of the fuel tank on the passenger side of the car. It is relatively easy to replace as it has a hose clamp on either end attaching it between the line from the fuel tank and the line to the fuel injection system. Filter costs about $ 12.

SOURCE: 2001 Mercury Cougar, won't turn over

This will sound stupid but check to make sure all the bulbs, yes I said bulbs, as in brake and turn signals are the correct bulb. No kidding. I fought a problem like this in my shop for a week on a mustang. It had a wrong brake light bulb. Just a idea. See if it will start by jumping the 2 posts on the starter solenoid under the hood on the inner fender. It has two battery cables going to it. use 2 heavy screw drivers to do this. Do not tough the metal of teh screw drivers. The solenoid could also be bad.

SOURCE: alternator not charging on my 2000 mercury cougar

Trace the Hot Wire and Ground connections from the Alternator, to the:-
1. Battery.
2. The Power Box Positive Input terminal on the Main Fuse Box. Ditto the Ground as well.
3. Any sign of Wiring Degeneration on these Circuits. [Cracks, Breaks, Bad Joints, etc]
4. Groung cable links from the Battery to the Engine and Bodywork.
Whatever you look for, there has to be a completion of a Positive and Negative circuit, from the Heart of the system, which is the Battery, and ALL functions for the Vehicle.
I hope I have set you on the right track.
Regards, DT

SOURCE: removing alternator bolts on mercury cougar

There are 3 bolts. You'll need a LOT of socket extensions and a car hoist!
and a lot of time and patients.

But an even better idea is to just check the wire connections make sure they are well connected and no gaps on the female connectors if you suspect a bad alt.

You say "doesn't start _immediately_". So it starts eventually?

Okay I change my alternator on my 2001 Cougar it keeps doing the same thing acting like my alternator is bad when it tastes good and my battery is brand new what's my problem

Is the battery going dead while you drive or when it's sitting? If it's going dead while you drive check the belt and tensioner. Do this, turn everything on then start the engine and rev it several times then carefully touch the alternator pulley if it's real hot the tensioner is bad and you need to replace it and the belt, in many cases the alternator will need almost 15 HP to turn under load, I hope this helps. Take care. If you have any questions for me use comments and it will show up in my email.

I have a 2001 mercury cougar that dies at about 30mph.... Can someone give me an idea where to start

clogged catylic converter. you would get a rotten egg smell if it is bad. see if the exhaust blows out smoothly. i had a honda crx that would die on bumpy roads. took me three days to find loose wires on my alternator. there are two wires that went to the same electrical post, they were touching. they were supposed to stay seperated.

I recently purchased a 2001 mercury cougar and it has an a DTC code P0340 faulty cam position sensor, out of time. I replaced the sensor and it did not fix the problem. The man I bought the car from had...

Unplug the alternator and see if the problem stops, if so replace it, a short inside the alternator can cause this problem, however still test good, and keep the battery charged and cause the computer to throw this code. Its possible the belt is a tooth off, however you would experience more trouble than what you have.

Not charging need to replace

I would check the fuses for a bad fuse. Most parts stores will test your alternator for free. Is the battery light on? Alternator belt tight?
