Yes this is normal on this type of engine and the early ford transit as well ,now the V6 essex engine doesnt have a counter balance shaft like the V4 transit engine or the ford corsair .Now what is happening is the teeth on the gearwheels are mismatched ,Now when these engines were built the gearwheels were colour coded with either white or yellow paint which signify the pitch of the teeth as more than one supplier was used on the assembly line ,So whats happened here is you have ordered a new gearwheel but not specified the colour code of the replacement part ,although i doubt if these parts are still available so i would assume that the parts used were from a scrapyard or classic car owners club ,well either way the two gears must be matched with the same colour paint ,so either try to get the crank gear from the old engine in the scrapyard or contact the owners club to see if they have a matched pair from another engine .Also make sure you have the right camshaft as these were colour coded as well ,yellow for the Zodiac and white for the capri GT ,now if you fit a capri GT cam you will have a faster top end but very little power at anything below 2000RPM ,now a lot of these cars were autos so make sure its a zodiac cam as the car just will not pull away very well and only do about 16/8 mpg compared with the zodiac cam that will have low end torque and about 25 mpg ,which is a big difference .

How long do you let the gasket sealer for the intake manifold sit to create the proper seal

you do not wait its that simple you apply and then bolt it up ,i never use any sealer but just grease unless its one of them big V engines with a manifold in the middle of the engine then i use contact adhesive around the water ports and grease on the iar ports ,it may seem weird but this is how we done them on the assembly line in fords 40 yrs ago on the V6 3litre Zodiac engines .Think iam showing my age here ?

Will a broken timing chain on a 2000 Lincoln ls mess up the motor

Yes, normally what happen is it throw out the valve timing. That is, one or two piston could be effected here with its related intake and exhaust valves. What could happen, broken piston tops, bent valves or broken valves.

Since, the 2000 Lincoln has a 4.6 litre V8 engine it will double over head cams. This mean each side of the engine on this V8 has it own camshaft. Also, Ford could have installed a cam brake, that is if the timing is lost, it will stop all valves in both heads to a close position. I hope so, some 4 cylinder have this option.

If the engine doesn't have a camshaft brake then major overhaul. It would be easier to buy an rebuilt factory engine to install. A good engine remanufacture that rebuild engine for Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and other auto manufactures would be you best bet. In other words, they rebuild those engines the way Ford wants them to be rebuilt. Best of luck. GB...stewbison

1999 ford expedition - needs a timing belt, but mechanics keep telling me that it has a chain and not a belt. I just need it done and want to know stuff like - how much time it takes, how much it cost's,...

No engine used in the Expedition has a timing belt, they all have timing chains, timing chains never have to be replaced unless they fail or the engine is being rebuilt. On this engine replacing the timing chains for each of the two camshafts (2) cost about $500.00

I have a honda s2000. intermittent issues starting. Push the button, get a whirr sound no cranking of engine. Most of the time it starts fine, no issues at all. I have problems about every 10-14 days,...

Need a new starter.. Whinning noise probably the solenoid not positioning the starter drive gear with the fly wheel. Basically the "hold in coil" of the starter is not working. Not a bad idea to have a voltage drop test done on the wiring to it.

1994 Ford Ranger 4 wheel drive does not work. Lights turn on.

High mileage truck I am assuming? Sounds as though your transfer case chain has broken. You can get kits to replace the chain. Or, you can find a used one from a wrecking yard to swap into place. If the truck is good otherwise I would not give up on it. A transfer case could run you up to $600.00 depending on weather it's new or rebuilt. A kit can run you $200.00 to $300.00.
