Question about 2001 Ford Expedition

I'm changing the brake pads and rotor on the back of a '01 expedition and I can't get the caliper piston to go in so I can put the new pads in. What do I do?

Did you use a c-clamp to push the caliper piston back in? if you did and it won't go back in then you need a new caliper.

Screw the piston in ,what i do without teh correct special tool is to put a G clamp on piston then turn with water pump pliers ,but sometimes some vehicles will just screw in with an old wood chisel or a piece of flat iron

Replace rear brake discs and pads


Depending on vehicle. Find level ground and park there. Put chocks in front and behind wheels not being lifted. Loosen lugs, jack up vehicle, set jack stands, lower vehicle on jack stands, remove lugs and wheel. Open hood remove brake fluid cap. Remove two bolts holding caliper, pull caliper off rotor disc and bracket, remove pads, place a used pad in front of caliper piston, use a c clamp to push caliper piston in caliper, remove c clamp and old pad, hang caliper up, remove 2 bolts holding caliper bracket, remove bracket, remove rotor, install new rotor, install caliper bracket, install new pads, install caliper, repeat this on other side, put cap back on brake fluid tank, remove bleeder fittings and keep pressing brake pedal until an even flow of brake fluid sprays out. Install bleeder fitting. Make sure brake fluid doesnt get on paint and is contained and disposed of correctly, top off fluid install wheels and raise car up remove jack stands, lower car and break in new pads

How do I replace the front roters


Remove the wheel, Remove the brake calipers, simply grab and pull the rotor off. Install new rotor, then push the piston back into the caliper a little ways, or all the way if installing new pads. This can be done using the old brake pad and a c-clamp to push the piston down. Install new pads and install the caliper. Install the wheel and torque to atleast 80 foot pounds. I torque mine to 100. Torque is important so as not to warp the new rotor.

How to replace front discs and pads


Front brakes are very simple to do:
  • Pull off the front tires.
  • Remove the brake pads by removing the slide pin bolts where the piston assembly attaches to the caliper mounting bracket. The slide pin bolts are usually a 12 or 14mm bolt. Once the piston assembly is free slide the old brake pads out.
  • Compress the piston back into the caliper by using a large pair of channel lock pliers or a c-clamp. If you don't do this, you won't be able to get the new pads on.
  • Before you put the new pads on, replace the rotor.
  • Remove the two bolts for the caliper mounting bracket. They are in the back and are bigger than the slide pin bolts. Usually a 17 or 19mm bolt.
  • Pull off the caliper mounting bracket.
  • At this point the old rotor should slide right off. If it doesn't slide right off, look for a screw in the center of the rotor, some cars will have a screw there to hold the rotor on. If there's no screw and it still won't come off, try tapping it with a hammer. If you're replacing the rotor, don't be shy.
  • Put the new rotor on. Make sure to clean off any grease with brake cleaner that may be on the braking surface from packaging.
  • Put the caliper mounting bracket back on.
  • Put the new brake pads on. Make sure to use some anti-squeal grease on the back of the pads.
  • Put the caliper assembly back on with the slide pins. Grease up the slide pins as well.
  • Put the wheels back on.
  • Make sure to pump your brakes 10 - 15 times before you drive off. Because you compressed the piston back into the caliper, the piston will not be contacting the brake pads unless you pump the brakes.

Put new pads on my 05 ford excursion 4x4 and I cant get the caliper to go back on the rotor. there are 3 pcs involved, the rotor, the caliper, and a bracket that the caliper mounts to. first I put on the...


youll have to clamp the brake hose,undo the bleed screw,and push the piston[s] back in,then shut off bleed screw,undo clamp on hose,and try assembly again.bracket first,then pads into bracket,then slide caliper over pads,and then put bolts holding caliper back in ,with a bit of grease on the slides.

Need help changing brake pads and routers on 2003


Remove brake fluid from the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir until the reservoir is approximately 1/2 full. Discard the removed fluid.
  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Front brake caliper guide pin bolts
    • Brake caliper by slowly sliding it up and off the adapter and brake rotor. Support the caliper out of the way with a strong piece of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose or damage to the brake hose will result.
    1. If necessary, compress the caliper piston into the bore using a C-clamp. Insert a suitable piece of wood between the C-clamp and caliper piston to protect the piston.
    2. Outboard disc brake pad from the caliper by prying the brake pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Slide the brake pad down and off the caliper.
    • Inboard disc brake pad from the caliper by pulling the brake pad away from the caliper piston until the retaining clip on the pad is free from the caliper piston cavity
  • To install:
    1. Be sure the caliper piston has been completely retracted into the piston bore of the caliper assembly. This is required when installing the brake caliper equipped with new brake pads.
    2. If equipped, remove the protective paper from the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.
    3. Install or connect the following:
      • New inboard disc brake pad into the caliper piston by pressing the pad firmly into the cavity of the caliper piston. Be sure the new inboard brake pad is seated squarely against the face of the brake caliper piston.
      • Outboard disc brake pad by sliding it onto the caliper assembly
      • Brake caliper assembly over the brake rotor and onto the steering knuckle adapter
      • Caliper guide pin bolts and torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on 2002–04 models or 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) on 2005 models
      • Front. Apply the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained.
    4. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid as necessary. Road-test the vehicle.

    For the rotors:

    I also have a 1999 model. What parts you want to use really depends on how much money you can spend. You can have the rotors turned (recut) but it takes time and if you want to keep the vehicle; new rotors will start out with the same potential life. Recut rotors will be different thicknesses and thin rotors will fail more quickly. You could end up with 4 different thicknesses.

    The old brake linings will show how the calipers are working. You want even wear. You can also have Emergency brakes linings inside the rear rotors. With ABS and Traction control the wheel sensors can be fouled with brake debris so it is important for the E brakes to be in good shape.

    I prefer Ceramic pads. They cost more, but are more heat resistant for towing and do not show brake dust. At least put them in front as most of the wear is in front. There is also a COP car pad with also works well but shows dust as it wears.

    Tips for removal- Rust can be a big problem. The rotors will swell around the hubs in back of the rotor. A Dremel or cold chisel is necessary to remove the rust on the hub. Plenty of Rust solvent is needed. Eye protection is a must. You will need to draw in the Caliper pistons so you should have a big C clamp (Big Lots store) and use an old lining pad to press the pistons back. Also remove the brake rmaster cylinder cap before pushing in brake pistons.

    New hardware is recommended and lube the slides with high temperature grease. Thats about it. Good Luck to you.

    How to replace front brake pads for a 2000 expedition


    raise and support the front ,remove both tires , there is two bolts on the backside of the caliper,I find it easier to pry on the back pad to drive the piston so you can wiggle the caliper off,do not let the caliper hang by the hose look at both sides of the rotor if they have groves they need to be turned if they are ok then you need to push the piston back into the caliper use a c clamp(loosen the bleeder valve on the caliper it makes it easier) put the pads on the rotor then put caliper back on and thighten bolts. repeat on other side. ( might pay to get a repair manuel if you have any doubts)

    How do you change the brake pads on 2005 expedition


    A 13 mm & a 15mm boxed end wrench is needed and a C Clamp. Jack up the front wheel and remove the tire and wheel. One of the wrenches will fit the two bolts that hold the caliper on the saddle. Before removing the caliper take a long and heavy screw driver and insert between the pad and caliper. try to pry the pad into the piston which you can not see but towards the engine side you will need to push the piston in. That way you can remove the caliper easily. Carefully set the caliper on a solid working area and do not stretch or bend the rubber hose too much. Had e the brake master cylinder cover off or loosened up well. Next take the C Clamp and use that to press the piston all the way flush with the caliper. You need to do this for with new pads the room is a nessisity. Have the rotors turned at any auto parts store locally. The re install new pads and reverse the proceedure to put back together. Your brake fluid should be near the full mark after your done. Take note when brake fluid is an inch low pads are very worn and need replacing. Check the rears every 35000 if towing excessively and 60000 if you do not tow a lot

    Need help changing the front rotors on my chevy 3500 4x4 dually


    Have to pull the front wheels, next back out the two caliper bolts (Allen head), next slide the caliper out of it's seat and set up on the spindle, careful not to damage the flex brake line. This will now free the rotor to come off the spindle. This is also a good time to check/replace brake pads. Chances are if your changing rotors, due to brake damage, warped or other, the pads need changed. This is simply done by sliding the old pads out and placing a C clamp over the piston to back it into the caliper housing to allow room to install new pads. Apply a little antisieze lub behind the pad between the piston and also anywhere the new pad bears. Install the caliper in reverse order and put the wheels back on. Remember to test the brakes before hitting the road, The new pads will have to be pushed out by applying brakes a few times. Then you should be good to go.

    Changing rotors and breaks


    When you replace the pads you have to retract the pistons into the bore. As the pads wear they stay extended from the brake caliper. The new thinkness of the pads will not allow the pads the slip over the rotors until you retract the pistons. Your pistons may be the type that have to be turned back into the bore.Good luck.
