My subaru outback wagon has grinding when shifting in to reverse, 1st and 3rd gear. Do I need some tranny oil? What do your experts think? the car has 102,500 miles. I hope its not the clutch! Thanks!

Grinding means the sycronizers are bad for gear shifting.

I'm hearing a grinding noise when shifting gears in my 97 nissan pathfinder. It's not a full blown grind but just a slight grinding noise. It does it in reverse 1st 2nd 3rd and just started doin it in 4th....

check and/or change the transmission oil. Clutch problems are noticeable in 1st and reverse but as all the rest are syncro controlled you really do not need to use the clutch to change them. just get the engine rpms to match road speed and they will slip in. I am thinking a oil viscosity problem because of the colder weather.

2003 Subaru outback h6 3.0. Starts fine, when I shift into reverse or drive I get a loud grinding noise

Is your 2003 Subaru Outback automatic or manual transmission?
If it is automatic, then your transmission sounds like it's malfunctioning into the reverse gear as it is not aligning properly.
If it is manual, then your transmission sounds like it may have a bad clutch or bad reverse gear.
Either solution is not cheap. Good luck.

1991 subaru legacy wagon automatic shifts fine into 1st , 2nd, & reverse but slips in 3rd & drive

Sounds like the clutches for 3rd Gear are worn out. Need to rebuild or replace the transmission.

Shifting problems on my 2000 Subaru Legacy Wagon. 4th Gear slips out, won't hold in at all. 3rd grinds when I shift it into gear, but slides in w/o the noise if I let the car slow down for a couple...

I would buy a used Trans and fix the other one over time. That way you can take it apart and it might not take a lot of money to fix it. Then you can sell it or save it. Also you may look at the different trans to put in yours. Maybe a Legacy GT 6 speed. Good luck and have a great day.

My car is a 1999 Subaru Outback Station wagon. We

two things you must address, first the tires may need rotating, 4WD cars need all tires to be close to the same size or conflicts in gearing occur, second change the oil in the rear axle this can cause noisy operation.

2000 Subaru Outback transmission problem

After a good deal of research and several shops suggesting a rebuild of the transmission, I decided to have the trans fluid and filters changed before doing anything. It was a tough call because it could have been a waste of $125. As soon as the spin off filter was removed you could see it was blocked. So the hydraulic pressure in the system was way down, still enough to engage reverse and enough to work all the shifts, but not enough to engage forward without a slight tap on the accelerator.

My Subaru has 240 000 km on it and I suppose the clutch pack rebuild wouldn't hurt, but as it is now it engages quickly and shifts up are noticeably smoother.

May not be the solution for every case, but it solved my situation.
