I replaced the back brakes.why would the brakes feel like they are not releasing and they are smoking

Many drum brakes have longer shoe lining on the back shoes. Make sure you didn't put the shoes on backwards. The short lining should be on front.

Groaning or Grinding? I would check the bearing. If that is heating to the point of smoking you need to stop driving right away or you will start your car on fire.

2002 Ford Excursion 7.3 4x4 rear brakes getting smoking hot. Noticed it on driver side first. Assumed the rotor was sticking, replaced it and the hose. Relaxed pads and found the pads on passenger side...


There are a number of issues that can cause overheating disc brakes. Disc brakes, when released, separate from the disc by the action of the rotor moving between them (since no rotor is perfectly true, there is a small about of wobble and it pushes the pads away from the rotor surface). Things that can cause this to go wrong are:

  1. Caliper pistons that have rust rings that cause sticking. This most often will happen right after or shortly after replacing old, work out pads with new ones. Because the caliper piston was extended out farther with the worn pads, its surface may get rusty. This rust can cause sticking when the piston is pushed back into the bore with the new, thicker pads.
  2. Caliper slide bolts will rust and get sticky, not allowing the caliper to release properly and re-center itself on the rotor. What you often see here is that one pad (inner or outer) is totally worn out and the other seems normal.
  3. Rusty brake lines/caliper internals can cause restrictions in the flow of brake fluid and hold pressure after the brake pedal is released.
It is highly recommended that whenever you change your brake pads, you replace the caliper slide bolts use a new brake hardware kit when reinstalling. The additional cost is almost always saved in longer brake pad life, and fewer complications.

This will likely be the left brake caliper piston is 'frozen' and cannot release once the brake peal is released after applying them. This causes overheating of the brake rotor, thus creating smoke, heat and smell. If you look at your rotor it is probably a blue color, which is not normal. However, in some cases the brake caliper that is frozen will not work and overloads the opposite side. The brake calipers must be checked for piston movement - by removing the caliper and trying to depress the piston back into its bore, if it will not depress the caliper must be replaced. The same holds true for the rear.

Smokes by pasanger front tire once in a while


sound like one of your caliper is getting stuck or lock. The seal to the piston probably worn out causing the piston in the caliper not to work properly. The piston in the calipers design to move back and forth to release the pressure off the brake disk. when the piston is lock it cause the brake pad and brake disk to rub causing much friction and heat, long period of braking can cause a fire. getting a rebuilt caliper is much easier to replace than have a mechanic rebuilding the old one. you can check if the calipers is lock up by touch and feel the outer hub of the wheel to see if its hot. if its feel hot and smell hot, replace the caliper.

Were the calipers check for not sticking, as well as lubed well when re-installed? If it's original flex hoses at calipers, that's also a consideration.

Front breaks are smoking


caliper is sticking or pads are sticking ,proportioning valve with vehicle jacked up and supported and wheel removed inspect pads and rotor for damage excessive wear if good- turn hub/rotor by hand have someone assist u by stepping on brake observe brake caliper stop then release brake piston should release slightly from pad try turn hub again w/out touching brake if stuck in place replace and caliper released replace pads if caliper still clamped remove caliper and inspect for leak or damage compress caliper and try brake again if does if sticks again replace caliper

My rear passenger tire started smoking what could the problem be?


Are you sure it's the tire? It could be the brakes (not releasing) which could result in 'smoke'. The only way it could be the tire would be if it was rubbing on something, or you were spinning or locking up the tires. Feel the center of the wheel when you see the smoke, if it's very hot, it's probably the brakes not releasing.

2003 ford ranger parking brake won't fully release


sometimes back up a good 20 to 30 feet will do the trick. if that fails you can jack it up and remove the tire on the side you think it is stuck. Put a block of wood between the bolts and hit it with a rubber mallet until the brake releases. you'll have to play around with it a bit but it will release eventually. then either have to cable replaced or never use the emergency brake again your choice. Hope this helps.
