Question about 2001 Ford F150 Styleside SuperCrew

1 Answer

I have a 2001 F150 supercrew with the 5.4 engine. It starts easily but will not run in park. It will die in 2-3 seconds but will restart easily. When I used both feet on the pedels and shifted into reverse the truck it runs fine. It also runs fine in drive. I started it about 10 times in the driveway and it always died when I took my foot off the acceletator.

Sounds like an issue with the IAC ( Idle Air Control ) on the back of the throttle body. Some times the plunger that moves to let air in the back of the throttle body at idle get gummed up, and won't move ( or move far enough ).

You will need to take the plastic throttle body cover off to get to it, it is held on with 2 8mm ( 7 or 9 ? ) size bolts ( actually a sheet metal screw with a hex head ).

When my 2001 had similar symptoms the 1st time I cleaned the IAC with throttle body safe cleaner and a q-tip. I rinsed the IAC with 90% alcohol, let it dry and reinstalled it. The 90% alcohol could be the source of the 2nd time I had an issue ( guess it dried out the rubber seals on the plunger ), so I replaced it ( think it was ~ 70.00 new from a Ford dealer that sells part online ).
Here is a picture of where it is located, bit of a stretch to get it out, but easy enough to do.

This is the plunger on the inside that needs to be clean and operate smoothly

I have a 2001 ford f150 5.4 v8. I shut it off and when I tried to restart the truck it would crank over fine but not start. starter turns fine and there's plenty of fuel. Truck ran fine prior to failing...

Check fuel injection. Could be a fuse or module. Also check to see if fully in park or in neutral.
Most likely electrical side of ignition. Since plugs, cap and wires are out of the way, it is most likely in the fuse panel.

2001 F150 supercrew w/ factory towing - No tail lights on trailer

Not sure which fuse you checked.
The Engine Compartment Fuse Panel ( Battery Junction Box / BJB ) is where the fuse is for the trailer tow adapter parking lamps.
Fuse # 5 is the fuse for the parking lamps, and the reversing lamps.

Next is the trailer tow adapter park lamp relay. This is what BJB Fuse #5 feeds, and the coil is operated by the truck's parking lamps. This is also in the BJB, Relay 201, it is the 1/2 size relay.

Not sure what you took a resistance reading from on the trailer tow adapter.

If you want, you can pull the trailer tow park lamp relay, and jumper the normally open contacts, which should provide power at the trailer tow adapters, regardless of the truck's lights.

I need to remove my number 6 ignition coil but

Hello. Here is the order of things for your truck. The engine firing order for either 4.6L or 5.4L V8 is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Cylinders are numbered, 1-2-3-4 on the passenger side bank of cylinders beginning at the front of the engine. Cylinders are numbered, 5-6-7-8 on the driver side bank again, beginning from the front of the engine to the back.
Soooooooo the number 6 is the second one from the front of the engine on the drivers side.

Check all of your vacume lines. If it isn't a vacume line it is most likely the O2 sensor.
