Own a 1995 gmc jimmy , service engine soon light is on and engine started running rough at idea. have actron cp9180 scantool but will not connect to computer in truck. Transition year from obd1 to obd 2 , truck has obd II connector and computer is on passeger side wheel well in engine compartment. Pins 2,3,4,9,13,16 have connection to the connector is there a way to read the trouble code without going to the dealership. Think egr valve maybe dirty or need replacement, 230k milege.

No fuse blown , epa sticker on fan shroud states 1995 jimmy is obd I complaint, but I have a obd II plug to plug my scanner into to try to read a trouble code. Is there a fix for this? patch cable or adapter? Or do you do the paper clip trick and read two digit trouble code like obd I cars?

Went to autozone they had same cp9180 scanner it didn't link to the computer . called actron tech support, They said the cp9180 wouldn't read the codes. GM bastard years 1994-1995 said cp9145 would read codes and had proper cable? Looked at web page, not sure $460 ? Or Autoxray code reader around $200 plus special cable $50. Or just goto the dealer to scan it. Will have to check erg valve and see if it does the trick first. Old time mechanic work in computer age when computers where going to make fixing thing cheaper ,easyer, and less time consuming ya right! GM wake up,oh US taxpayers wake up,is this is why we own the company. people tired of the headaches even the small ones.

Have you checked the fuses for the cigarette lighter or accessory port fuses? These are the ones that usually power up obd II devices and allow communication between the scanner and pcm. EGR on the 4.3 are a very common problem for catbon build up and if it is stuck open will cause rough idle. Check those fuses and let me know if scanner will communicate.

Not that I am aware of on jumping the pins.I recently had a a 95 buick same issue but it did read the OBD II.Do you have another OBD II vehicle that you can plug into just to make sure the scanner is working ok and does your scanner have just the generic OBD II function? I have had a few that won't read codes unless you use the generic OBD II function. If an Autozone or Advanced auto is near run it over to them see if there code reader will codes or not.

That doesn't surprise me. I know here they have a egr gasket available that has a screen instead of being open at the pintle.

1995 GMC Jimmy starts cold but quits as soon as you let off the ignition. Then won't restart.

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem - the fuel pump may not be working on restart, the fuel regulator may be sticking or leaking, etc. Try checking the pressure at the access fitting in the engine compartment (you will need a fuel gauge assembly).

I have a 1997 jimmy and it cranks up fine but it starts bogging down when i am driving and when i try to climb a hill

You may have a clogged up egr valve. When the egr valve gets clogged up with carbon, the truck will run rough, surge stall, and be very anemic on power. Is the service engine soon(check engine) light on? I've dealt with this issue before, and those 4.3 v6's tend to get egr issues. Try this: when it bogs and runs rough, stop truck, open hood, and tap on egr valve base( where it bolts to engine) if rough running clears up, there's your problem. Egr valve is located on front of engine just to the rt of alternator bracket.

Could the mass air flow sensor cause 98 Jimmy to not start? It only turns over and begins to start but boggs out.

Yes it could cause it not to start or could start and run very rough. Are you sure you are getting proper fuel pressure? Could be many things that would cause it not to start and run though. Is your service engine soon light on the dashboard lit up? it is where your gauges are.

Service Engine Soon Light

The best way to know what is happening there is to drive a GMC dealer and get them to hook in the diagnostic tool and read the computer memory for present faults.

Truck losing power and service engine soon light on

Like to other guy said, give it a tuneup. Also try SEAFOAM to clean carb up of slug. Also check to make sure the butter fly for the choke has not come loose, causing it the choke it down. Failed choke pull-off.
