If it's still doing this with a hew head gasket, the head is likely cracked and must be replaced.

How do I check for a blown head gasket on my 1990


Pretty much same answer as I gave for 87 Reliant see below. Shops have equipment to do cylinder leakage test. Do basic stuff below before doing last test ...cylinder leakage...which costs $$$.

Main point you are losing antifreeze/water. Check to see if you have water on the dipstick mixed in with oil. If so...probably a head gasket. If oil looks normal..... Before you do any test, tighten every hose connection. Check for loose connection into antifreeze reservoir. Sometimes there are small cracks on top which lets out pressure from cooling system. Look for leaks on water pump and radiator. Look at spot where you park the car...any liquid on floor? Not sure?..Put piece of cardboard under car to see if liquid is dripping from car. No leaks?...Start with a pressure test of the system. The pressure test is simply equipment that replace the radiator cap, a hand pump connected to it then air is pumped into cooling system. You watch the gauge to see if pressure is dropping. If pressure does not drop ..problem is most like a worn radiator pressure cap or stuck thermostat.. Do not buy the kind with button on cap to push down and release pressure. get original type and correct pressure. If overheating still, thermostat could be stuck, replace. Overheating of engine causes vapor lock, bubbles in fuel, which causes car to stall and kill. When cools off, fuel cools down and fuel will flow through fuel system again. Large amount of oil disappearing with overheating also sounds like head gasket or cracked head....Tighten up all bolts to gaskets, look for oil leaks on garage floor or driveway. If engine has developed a miss when running, pull plugs out and look for wet fouled plug. If antifreeze leaking into cylinder...plug tip will be whitish, if oil leaking into cylinder, grimey oil fouled. Do compression test on cylinder that is fouled and that will pinpoint if bad head gasket or cracked head. When doing compression test, radiator cap is removed and you listen to hear bubbles in radiator from the cylinder leaking into cooling system. 87 Reliant not worth pulling engine apart if head gasket or cracked head. Best oil treatment to reduce oil consumption is "Engine Restore" Used on my 58 Impala 348 tri power for 28 years. If I did not add it after oil changes it used oil and smoked....I swear by it for ANY engine after 100,000 miles.

Sorry to say the head gasket is still shot, and you probably have cracked the cylinder head too.
The excessive pressure in the radiator and the overheating is compression going from the cylinders to the cooling system. You may not be leaking coolant into the oil as fast as you were, but its still letting compression into the radiator.

white smoke usually means blown head gaskets,have radiator fan checked,water pump,check coolant for oil in coolant,could be blown in between cylinders,causing coolant to go out exhaust,have compression check done on cylinders.

Overheating when driving no mixing of the coolant and oil


The three most likely thing's cause overheating are faulty thermostat,electric fan or clogged radiator. Only at has been overheat so much it boils dry that it will cause engine trouble. Most common problem's are blown cylinder head gasket or a cracked cylinder head.
mixing coolant and water depends on where the gasket has blown or head is cracked. You will first need to check if it actually is overheating. The reason is. If the head is cracked or gasket blown then you can get a false boiling which is compresion from the cylinders blows through the crack in the head or gasket causing the coolant to blow out of the radiator cap.Fill the radiator to the top leave the cap off then start the engine.If the water blows out then you will need to remove the cylinder head check the gasket is ok. If its damaged replace if not get the head checked for crack's. If no water blow's when you start it check the thermostat is working properly. To check the thermostat put it a in a saucepan cover it with water bring the water to the boil. It should open before the water boil's but near boiling-point. If its ok then start the engine again leave it running until it boils and check the fan is running. If that's ok then its radiator problem. Their is no way to check if the radiator is ok you will need to get a new one. One last point. If the cylinder head or gasket are faulty it was caused by overheating so by just fixing the cylinder head problem is not a cure it will overheat again. Check the three things I mentioned at the begining and told you how to check them. Hope this help's. Cheer's

what you want to do is remove the thermostat and see if it overheats again. if so im sorry to say its the water pump

but if not and it runs fine the them is prolly just not opening all the way.. rip it and replace it my friend its a Honda easier the ezmac

Hi,

In its simplest terms, the head gasket is the spacer/insulator between the cylinder head and the engine block. When the piston (in the block) moves upward to compress the air/fuel mixture (against the cylinder head), tremendous pressure develops inside the combustion chamber. The pressure will find any easy means of escape to expand. If the gasket is defective, the pressure will pass through that gasket and enter the water jackets (where the collant flows through). The pressure/air bubbles will ride the coolant flow and eventually end up inside the radiator and would then be visible as you have posted.

Incidentally, the gasket may be OK but the cylinder head could be warped and the same fault would also be exhibited. This is especially more so on aluminum heads.

Both the gasket problem and/or the warped cylinder head could have resulted from a prior overheating problem.

Corrective procedure on the air bubbles would require top overhauling wherein only the cylnder head is removed. Of course once removed, your mechanic would be able to inspect the pistons and its sleeves and could decide if a general overhaul is required or stick to the cylinder head work. A top overhaul also requires cylinder head gasket replacement.

Unto the overheating problem, you may want to check the water pump, thermostat, fan, fan relay and fan clutch. It may also be to your added advantage if you would have the radiator flushed/cleaned as well as the water jackets. Some mechanics especially in warmer regions opt to completely remove the thermostat and permanently wire the fan to always be on.
