Question about 2004 Honda Civic

1 Answer

I have noticed my 2004 Civic vibrates a bit when I first start it and also when the a/c is on and I am not driving. Then the check engine light came on yesterday. Could that be related to the vibrating? What could it be and is it expensive to fix???

Vibration in 4 cyl. vehicles is more common than in 6 and 8 cyl. engine vehicles. However, the check engine light might indicate that something is wrong in the ignition or emission system that could cost a significant amount to repair or fix.

I would have the system scanned for the codes to try to find out what exactly is wrong with the engine, whether it is a bad sensor, or bad ignition, or what not.

Today's car computers can detect hundreds of things that are possibly wrong with an engine/ transmission combination.

Agh! Not the answer I wanted! One more question. I just noticed that my gas cap was not all the way screwed on when I put gas in my car today. The check engine light came on the day after I got gas the last time. If that was the problem, how long would it take the check engine light to turn off?

The gas cap problem can be cleared with an OBD-II Scanner, or after about 40 or so cycles of starting the engine and shutting off the car if it's like a GM.

Sears sells an OBD-II scanner for about $59 to $100 that can clear codes.

Walmart sells one for about $98 that I bought that clears codes and describes in English which sensor is faulty or being tripped.

OBD-II is a system of diagnosing used on 1996 and above vehicles.

The gas cap problem may take less than 40 cycles of turning on and turning off the engine, I think, since that's a more common problem than other types of errors found in the computer system.

But, I've never had a Honda that I have personally forgotten to screw the cap on tightly, and cycled it until it stopped showing up as a check engine error before. Just read about other people having this problem and rectifying it by screwing it back on and having the code cleared as soon as possible.

Great, thank you for your help!!! I pray it's just the gas cap thing!!

I hope it's just a gas cap not being screwed on tightly, because if it's something else that mimics this problem, like a leaky filler neck or something like that, then it could be more difficult to repair.

However, I think that the rough idle doesn't really have anything to do with the low pressure in the gas tank, as a result of a loose gas cap, for instance.

There probably is something else wrong causing the rough idle.

A leak of some fluid, probably oil, dripping onto the exhaust. This smells terrible, and it only needs a drop or two.

2004 Audi s4. After a trip we noticed that the car had some vibration in the stick shift. The next day the engine was running rough(vibrating) upon start and driving it. I also noticed when you push out...

I was thinking a broken motor mount until you said the clutch stopped working. Tranmission / clutch is my only thought now - sorry.

Steering shakes at 60mph - 2004 Honda Civic LX. Alignment?

If you feel like the whole car is vibrating a bit as well, it is defiantly a tire alignment problem. Take into the shop you had the tires aligned last and they should fix it free of charge.

Good luck

97 Honda Civic shakes at start and check eng light comes on.

It looks like misfiring in one cylinder. That is why check engine come on. Misfiring can be due to spark plugs/wiring/worn distributor cap. Maybe also vaccum leak and clogged injectors (use injector cleaner).

Vibration

I'd start by having the new parts checked. Make sure your in balance, and have good tires. Then i'd check your bushings, especially in your trailing arm.

the engine mounts and the transmission mounts are broken which causes vibration you can test this by slightly lifting the engine a little bit using a small floor jack but do not lift too much on the oil pan just enough to raise the engine a little and you will notice the vibration is gone if this is the case replace all the mounts.
