Question about Ford Fairmont

1 Answer

1997 Ford Falcon Sedan GLi Automatic. Car is using alot of fuel and is down on power. Had spak plugs, fuel filter, oil and oil filter changed 6 weeks ago. Also has had new radiator in the past 4 months due to corrosion and also new ignition coil due to failure. I have had an oxygen snsor replaced due to diagnostics computer report and also the air and fuel systems cleaned out. The last tank of fuel (60 litres got me just 300kms and this was over 2 120km jouneys and some town driving. On gravel roads the car will not spin/skid the drive wheels from stationary position even in 1st gear. When I press the accelerator in neutral after starting from cold the car hesitates for a few seconds before reving (there is sometimes a knock sound from the engine bay when I do this but not always). The mechanic I have been dealing with does not know what the problem is and suggested the transmission as sometimes the car does rev excessively whilst accelerating hard.

Took the car to a different mechanic and they checked and adjusted the timing!! This only cost me $50 as appossed to nearly $500 I had wasted on having the oxygen sensor replaced and air and fuel systems cleaned.

Have them change the knock sensor. What this sensor does, is sense preignition and ****** the timing when predetonation is detected. If the sensor is keeping the ignition retarded, you will have lack of power, poor transmission shifting(a lot of times a trans can be mis diagnosed due to a driveability malfunction). What he will see on the scanner is timing that will either not change or change very little. If you can hear knocking while accelerating(even standing still) this is a good indication. You are correct, that is high consumption. One thing you can do for yourself is, whilst driving at around 60 kms, step on the accelerator and listen very closley for an almost metallic pinging coming from the engine bay. This is a great confirmation and you will be able to instruct your mechanic what to change. Let me know and I will continue to assist.

I have a 1997 Ford falcon Gli EL auto sedan. I need to obtain new front L&R light assemblies. Can you help.

Just contact some vehicle dismantlers/wreckers in your area that deal in Ford parts.

Getting a set of those front lights in good shape should be fairly easy as there are many of these vehicles in wreckers yards now.

Adjusting headlights

Hi Sara,
if you look behind the headlight assembly you should find the adjusting screws for moving the light sideways and up and down. Best way to do it is to put your car 2m away from a wall and on flat ground and adjust the height of the beams on the wall.
