Why won t my car turnover

  • Okay, a clicking sound is the solenoid engaging the starter drive gear but the starting motor is not turning over. First possible is low battery. Second is bad or dirty connection, usually battery terminal. Good enough to energize solenoid but not enough amps to spin starter. Third is a bad starter motor, usually a brush corroded, worn or stuck.
  • Lift the hood and look at the battery terminals. if they are clean and tight, check the battery for charge. I usually hook a booster on and try cranking the engine over. ZIf it works, charge or replace the battery.
  • If it didn't crank, Take a jumper cable and connect the one end to the battery positive. Touch the other end to the starter motor terminal. Motor should turn over, if not, replace the starter.

Hello I have a 1993 Ford Festiva and it is not starting at all. The engine is not clicking over. Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? The more replies the better thank you

Have you tried jump starting it? is there twelve Volta at the battery when you try to start it? Is there 12 volts on the small wire on the starter when you try to start it? Have You tried replacing the battery? If the battery is good, there is power to the starter on the large wire, and power on the small wire when the key is in the start position than replace the starter. All the alternator does is supply power to the vehicle after the vehicle is started and recharge the battery. It doesn't have anything to do with the car not starting. I should add that I would make sure the engine turns over by hand. If there was a problem with the engine not turning over you should at least hear a single click from the starter which it doesn't sound like that is happening. Let me know what you find mate!

My 1993 seville was running fine, I turned it off and when I tried to start it again the starter kicked but the engine would not turn over as if it's stuck or locked.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

How to change a starter motor

Disconnect battery, remove and mark wires and cable taken off starter, remove the 3 mounting bolts and remove starter. It looks like two bolts come from other side and bolt into starter and 1 bolt goes thru the starter into the bell housing/motor. Do the oposite to install. Here is a picture of your starter and a good place to purchase it. Wish you luck.

Car won't start:1/18/09

Ok - I'm not a mechanic, but from my experience...
  1. When you tried to start the car, did the starter motor try to turn the engine or did it only make a click sound?
  2. If it tried to turn the engine on then first check if the battery is empty. Ask someone to help you jump start the car from his battery. If that works and your car starts up, the battery was probably empty. Just drive the car for 30 min or so to recharge the battery, without having the lights, air condition or any other electrical element on.
  3. If it did not work, your starter motor might be defective. (This is often the case if the starter motor only clicks without even trying to turn the engine over.) Then you have to replace the starter motor - either you do it yourself or get the car to a garage.
If this did not get you any further, let me know what happened when you tried to start your car. It also could be an electrical problem, but first check the battery.

Wont start

is the earth cable giving a good engine and body contact.does your starter have two terminals and if so are they the right way around?is the battery any good?Is the engine able to be turned over by hand Make sure you have agood 12v supply to the starter solenoid when cranking the engine An engine test probe/light would be of a lot of use for you to do that test
