SOURCE: I have a 88 volvo 740 GLE and it wont fire.

The problem wont be your timing belt. you need to take out a spark plug plug it into your HT lead and check for a strong spark or even if there is a spark. check your contact breakers on the distributor as well

SOURCE: ENGINE MISFIRE AND SHAKING

check your wire harness on the top of the engine. Volvo must have bought harnesses from Mercedes. The insulation just cracks and disintegrates, then the wires short. Not good for an ignition system.Once they short It can fry the circuit for that cylinder in the computer. Does not set a code other than Misfire.

P1290 Ford
P1290 Ford - Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor Signal Less Than Self-Test Range

Repair Importance Level: 3/3

Repair Difficulty Level: 3/3 What does this mean?

http://engine-codes.com/p1290_ford.html

Forum Code

Possible causes

- Wrong thermostat

- Not at operating range

- Engine overheated

- Low engine coolant level

- Faulty Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor

- Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor harness is open or shorted

- Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor circuit poor electrical connection

What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

The Engine Control Module (ECM) detected the cylinder head temp below expected values

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

P1290 Ford Description

The Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor is mounted into the wall of the cylinder head and is not connected to any coolant passages. The CHT sends a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) indicating the cylinder head temperature. If the temperature exceeds 126°C (-258°F), the PCM disables four fuel injectors at a time. The PCM will alternate which four injectors are disabled every 32 engine cycles. The four cylinders that are not being fuel injected act as air pumps to aid in cooling the engine. If the temperature exceeds 154 °C (310°F), the PCM disables all of the fuel injectors until the engine temperature drops below 154°C (310°F).

Volvo Penta 5 Litre 300hp fuel injected engine sounds an alarm and shuts down to idle if run at 4000 rpm for 8 to 10 mins. All gauges show everything is fine and the engine oil is fresh and at the correct...

It's a safety issue. The computer is trying to save your engine and transmission. If there isn't a light, there still could be a code. It would be in history codes. It takes a scanner to retrieve them. Unless your a race car driver or doing 200 MPH all the time. The RPM's shouldn't stay at 4000 RPM's.

I am unable to remove the injectors from a Volvo Penta diesel 3 cylinder engine (2003).can you suggest anything. Thank you.

Hi there?
If they got carbon deposit bult up round the injector, it helps to sock it in cocacola. Yeah i know weird but it does the trick.
If there is no such thing then try twisting them left and right and eventually it will give up, you may need to use a hamer........
Good luck.........

Can anybody tell me the correct type and weight of oil a 2004 volvo xc 90 uses also # for replacment oil filter

Oil filter is provided by year, make, model of your vehicle at the parts store. ---
Oil and fluids Oil quality
Engine oil must meet the minimum ILSAC specification GF-2, including ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF and SJ/Energy Conserving.
Your Volvo has been certified to standards using ILSAC oil specification GF-2 5W-30. Volvo recommends use of oil with a quality rating equal to or higher than ILSAC GF-2. Equivalent and better oils include ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF, and SJ/Energy conserving. Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engine performance, or engine protection.
Volvo Cars recommends Castrol. Depending on your driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide superior fuel economy and engine protection. Consult your Volvo retailer for recommendations on premium or synthetic oils. Oil additives must not be used. NOTE: Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintenance is carried out. This oil is only used at customer request, at additional charge. Please consult your Volvo retailer. Operation in hot climates.
When temperatures exceed 86° F (30° C) in your area, Volvo recommends, for the protection of your engine, that you use a heavier weight oil, such as SAE 10W-30. See the viscosity chart below. pg129a.jpg Oil viscosity (stable ambient temperatures)
Operation in temperate climates
Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life. Under normal use when temperatures do not exceed 86° F (30° C), SAE 5W-30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection. See the viscosity chart above. Extreme engine operation
Synthetic oils meeting SAE 10W-30 and complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous areas. Changing oil and oil filter
Oil and oil filter changes should be made at 7,500 mile (12,000 km) intervals. Volvo does not recommend the use of oil additives.
Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintenance intervals except at ower request and at additional charge. Please consult your Volvo retailer.

Have you checked compression on non firing cylinders? Likely has blown head gasket between these two cylinders if located side by side.
