The CEL should also be on in your truck. The Ford DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) P0171 is for bank one (passenger side) on 6 and 8 cylinder vehicles. There are also several differenct things that might cause this trouble code.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

1. One of the most common causes is a bad EGR differential Pressure sensor. It is mounted on the engine and is connected to the EGR valve via two rubber hoses. The sensor itself has an elecrtical connector, 2 hose fittings and is rectangular about 3" X 2". Replace the sensor if necessary.

2. Another cause may be a bad or dirty Mass Airflow (MAF)sensor. The MAF sensor is located inside the air inlet duct near the throttle body. The mount and electrical connector is outside the duct. The MAF is basically a hot wire in the airflow stream. It is fairly easy to clean. Disconnect the air inlet duct just upstream of the sensor. You will see a screen, and behind the screen is the MAF sensor wire. Use a good quality spray ELECTRONICS cleaner. Use ONLY electronics cleaner! Any other solvent may damage the MAF sensor. Spray the MAF sensor wire through the screen and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Give it another shot of electronics cleaner and let it sit another 5-10 minutes. Reconnect the air duct and start the engine.

If the CEL comes on again, you may have to replace the MAF sensor. If that fails, it might be a vacuum or fuel delivery problem. Honestly, I don't know that much about how to correct vacuum problems.

God Bless and good luck!

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code.... Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 has detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1

Type: OBD Code PO 171 --or whatever the codes are

If you have Oxygen Sensor Codes, it is most likely the upstream sensors have failed, because you did not know they get replaced as preventative maintenance at 100,000 or when they fail, if that is how you take car of your vehicles

P0171 codes

Code 171 means the O2 sensor data showed the fuel mixture was too lean when the engine was running. The code will not keep the engine from starting.
The actual cause may be a failed fuel pump or filter.

Hi,i have an windstar engine code 171 and i dont know whats the problem

171 is the 1st bank running lean. If you have the 3.8 motor, I am pretty sure it is the beginning of the leaks that cause the 174 code (other side) gaskets and seals to fail. Ford has never been able to make the 3.8 motor work! The good news is they are aware of it and have a service bulletin out on it. It probably will cost between 6-8 hundred, again assuming you have the 3.8 Save your receipt, maybe one day Ford will own up to their mistakes on the 3.8 and if they do a recall they will reimburse you.

Check engine light on computer codes 171 174 171-HEGO sensor unable of snitch cylinder bank #1 fuel system at adaptive limit (1990 on) code 174 hego sensor snitching too slow, cylinder bank #1 (1990)

switch, we run off snitches. 171 174 banks 1 & 2 Lean. Most likely cause are Upper Intake Manifold Gaskets, failed seals. It's not 1990 on. It's 1996 and on OBD2.

PO 171 and PO174 codes but different problem

transmision shifts are based on engine load imputs a 171 and 174 refer to a lean condition therefor the shift is being based on an assumed cold engine so yes it may be related
