Question that needs to be answered here is.... does it crank when you turn the key? That should determine how you attack the problem. Without knowing the answer to that question. I'd say check the batteries ground wire and the wiring from the battery to the starter. Possible corroded connection in the wiring harness if it isn't cranking. If it cranks fine and doesn't start. You might need to look into fuel pressure. You can probably swap the fuel pump relay with a known good relay. If all of that checks good, remember you need fuel and spark.
Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? How to use a DMM - digital multi-meter to diagnose automotive electrical circuit's ? Looking at a wiring diagram to see what all is involved in the starter circuit , main battery cables , park neutral safety switch , starter relay etc.. Find video's on youtube . Do you have a manual or automatic trans. ? The purple wire get's B+ voltage from the starter relay in the underhood fuse / relay box .
Hey Opie , how are thing's in Mayberry ? Ha Ha Ha , bet you get that a lot .
The ignition will not turn over.
You mean the starter will not turn over ? When you turn the key to the start position nothing happens ? The starter doesn't spin the engine .
Could be a few reasons . High resistance in the starting circuits . Do you have and know how to use a volt meter ? Doing voltage drop testing on the starter motor , cables .
Looking at a wiring diagram and testing the control side of the starter circuit , relay ,ignition switch , wiring etc... Do you know what a wiring diagram is and how to read one ? Video's on youtube showing how to understand diagrams . Here is a web site for free wiring diagrams . http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html
Enter vehicle info. Year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue links one at a time . Do you have a manual or automatic transmission ? Could have a bad clutch switch if manual trans or park neutral safety switch with automatic trans .
Check out some videos on basic automotive electrical testing .
Replace the starter. Starter is bound up and is drawing a lot of amps thus causing the burnt wire smell and wire to be hot.
This is a good video to help you diagnose the starter.
Anti-theft system problem .Can't hook up the starter wrong , two wires ,one big one , one small one . Won't interchange .
Is there a little red light on top of the dash pad , does it flash fast when trying to start . Here is a web site for free wiring diagrams . http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year make , model and engine size . Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click starting .Click search button then the blue link .Do you have a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Do you know how to use one . Test ,don't guess . Electric Testing Techniques You Need to Know Basic Electricity for Service Techs Ohm law Current Flow Opens Shorts
what did you do to fix it ??? Look at a wiring diagram an use a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter an test the starter electrical circuits .
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit
This is how professional automotive technician's find an fix this .
We don't guess an we don't ask if someone has had the same problem , because it is never the same .
Looking at wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in the starter circuit is the first step in the diagnostic procedure . The clicking your hear is more then likely the starter relay .
Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine . Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue link .
Test don't guess .
Looking at a wiring diagram to see what all is involved in the starter circuit's an testing with a DMM - digital multi-meter is how you go about diagnosing this . Free wiring diagram's here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size . Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue like. Looking at the diagram i see a starter relay ,ignition switch , PCM - engine computer ,the starter . The starter should have only two wire's , heavy gage red - this is B+ voltage for the starter . A smaller gage purple wire - this is the control wire . Do you know how a relay work's ? video's on youtube showing how . If the computer see's an input from the park neutral safety switch on no anti-theft system problems it will supply a ground for the starter relay , sending B+ voltage to the starter solenoid engaging the starter an spinning the engine over .
you really don't need one..... 1.Disconnect the battery 2.locate the starter. If its a v8 itll be on the driver side at the back of the engine beside the oil pan 3.there are two bolts on the bottom of the starter that you need to remove with a 9/16 socket or wrench.(support the starter when you remove the last bolt so the wires don't get broken) 4.observe the location of all of the wires attached to the starter(make a diagram so you don't forget where they go) 5.Remove the nuts that hold the wires on the starter.(make sure the ring connectors and wires are in good shape if you notice any damaged ones they should be replaced) 6. reverse procedure to install new one ..............hope this is helpfull.good luck!
