Bottom falls out of idle after revving engine cold

Its probably a problem with the water temperature sensor. Also do not rev a cold engine. The engine has a "cold start sequence" which is similar to a choke. When the engine gives a cold signal, the fuel mix is made richer and the timing is changed until the engine warms.

Let the engine warm at the preset factory settings. Sometimes the O2 sensors will cancel the cold start sequence before the water is warm. Racing the engine will warm the O2 sensors too quickly.

Running lean

I know the water temp sensor and air flow sensor can cause that. There are other possible solutions but, the Water temp sensor plugs into the intake it adds fuel when water is cold and gives less fuel when the water gets warm -- the air flow sensor will add and take away fuel depending on quantity and quality of air.

I have a 1997 Pontiac gtp with a code P0171. The light on the dash sometimes is on and sometimes it goes off on its own but more often is on.

That means that cylinder number 1 is running too lean.

There are number of causes of this that need be checked out one at a time. Allowing a lean condition can very easily damage your motor, most likely a burned valve first.

First and foremost...never run regular fuel in your GTP. 91 octane minimum. Going lower won't necessarily cause the condition it's in now but it does pre-detonate, causing damage and robbing horsepower.

Anyways...disconnect your MAP sensor. Then drive the car it for a few on/off cycles, to operating temperature and if the code is cleared immediately before driving and doesn't return then you likely need a new MAP sensor.

Second...if disconnecting the MAP sensor does not clear the code, consider the gasoline brand and it's age. Having water in it can cause the lean condition. In this case I recommend an additive for your GTP fuel...first, add the highest octane at the pump that you can then add a can of some stuff called B-12 by Chemtool.

Also inspect the connectors and wiring harness to your MAP and oxygen sensors.

After you have located and solved the culprit, change your spark plugs. I recommend copper core Autolite 605 gapped to .055-.057 for a factory stock GTP.

Looking for fuel filter on 2004 chevy silverado ss 6.0, not on frame rail

Here is the steps for the removal and replacement...getting you the picture and location next. 6.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cables.
  2. Drain the fuel from the fuel filter as follows:
    • Install a hose on the water drain on the water-in-fuel sensor.
    • Place the other end of the hose into an approved container.
    • Drain as much fuel as possible from the fuel filter housing.
    • Tighten the water drain on the water-in-fuel sensor.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Water-in-fuel sensor harness connector
    • Fuel filter from the fuel filter/heater element housing
    • Water-in-fuel sensor from the fuel filter

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Water-in-fuel sensor in the fuel filter
    NOTE Check the fuel filter/heater element housing and the filter for a dislocated filter seal or foreign debris. Contamination on the filter/heater housing may cause leakage at the fuel filter. Coat the seal with clean engine oil.

    • Fuel filter on the fuel filter/heater element housing
    • Water-in-fuel harness connector
    • Negative battery cables
  2. Prime the fuel system:
    • Pump the primer located on top of the fuel filter 30 times or until stiff.
    • Try to start and run the engine. If the engine does not start, repeat the previous step.
    • Allow the engine to run for 5 minutes at idle.
    • Check for fuel leaks and clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

mcdevito75, The service schedule is only an estimate from the factory or repair shop, bring the car in for service now. Possible causes, Dirty fuel filter, weak fuel pump, dirty plugs, dirty gas, (Water in gas) bad sensor--s.

Whats the best way to replace fuel pump ? drop the tank or the bed

According to the factory service manual, you should drop the tank, there are pictures and diagrams with these in the manual.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the fuel tank. .
  4. Remove the fuel tank.
  5. Remove the fuel sender assembly.
  6. Note the position of the fuel strainer (2) on the fuel sender.
  7. Support the fuel sender assembly with one hand and grasp the strainer (2) with the other hand.
  8. Pull the strainer off the fuel sender. Discard the strainer after inspection.
  9. Inspect the strainer. Replace a contaminated strainer and clean the fuel tank.
  10. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector (5).
  11. Remove the electrical connector retaining clip (6) from the fuel level sensor.
  12. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector (7) from under the fuel sender cover.
  13. Remove the fuel level sensor retaining clip (4).
  14. Squeeze the locking tangs and remove the fuel level sensor (3).
  15. Remove the fuel pressure sensor (1).
A good place to get an inexpensive service manual is from Promanuals it's a complete factory manual.
