Question about 2001 Ford Excursion

1 Answer

I have a 2001 ford excursion with the v10 and 57000 miles. Periodically I have this problem but today, I now cannot get it started even after sitting for 30 minutes. The engine cranks and has a good battery. I got it started once today without problem and shut it down as I forgot something inside. When I came back out, it would not start. It just grinds. I do not smell gas when I open the hood but a slilght breeze was blowing. I know it is not the battery. There is 1/4 tank of gas so it is not the gas. What do I do?

If the warning light did not come on telling you there is a problem, I would guess it is a cam sensor, damn things cause more trouble than muslims, Get it to a parts store and put the odb2 on it and see what it says, Sometimes you can by with just cleaning the sludge off the thing. Most of the time you have to replace it, or all 4 of them. don't buy it from the dealer, get one on line and save about $75. They are expensive little ****, $129. Hope this helps.

2001 ford excursion 4x4 troubleshooting

the transfer case shifter linkage may be loose or binding. Check the shift fork for signs of cracks or wear.
Damaged internal gears or viscous coupler prevent the transfer case from shifting into "4-low" or "4-high" drives.
and in evry 15000 miles need to change oil.

I have a very leaky heater core in my 2001 Ford Excursion 4x4 PSD

You could disconnect the hose from the core and connect it to the return for the time being. Of course, you'll have no heat for when the temperature drops back into the 90's. :^ )

My Excursion stopped several times on freeway

If your Excursion has the 7.3L Diesel, what I first suspect is the Ford recalled item Cam Position Sensor (CMP sensor). If your nearby Ford dealership has not replaced it for free for you, then make an appointment and take the car in to have the sensor replaced. If this does not solve your stalling problem, come back to FixYa and I will assist you further.

After warm up starts to have a dead miss

Depending on the miles and how you keep it serviced, the catalytic converter can have some blockage and the backpressure can cause this. It happened to my excursion.

Ford excursion limited 7.3

a 7.3 with 97K miles is just getting started on it's lifespan. These motors will last for sometimes 300K miles with regular service. They do have a 100K powertrain warranty so you're close to out of warranty on this one. The transmissions and torque converters were sometimes weak, but if you treat them right, they'll last.
Personally, I've got a ;'01 Limited since 2003 and I've got close to 180,000 miles on it... I've done regular service on it, brakes, changed the tranny out, have a banks kit on it, and it runs like there's no tomorrow.
Great rig, highly recommend a diesel.
Even tho ford isn't making the Excursion any more, the Super Duty is around to stay for a while so there'll always be service parts for the Excursion...
Hope that helps in your decision... KEN
