The oil filter for the 2002 Impala with the 3.8L is behind the right front wheel. Really.
I think the filter for the 3.4L is high-up on the front side of the engine (in-between the radiator and engine)

How many motor mounts does a 2002 Chevy Impala have?

There are 3 mounts. 1 on the passenger side of car behind the oil filter, the transmission mount (right above the axle on the driver side), and you also have a torque strut mount that's on top of the engine, as soon as you open the hood of the car

Can't find oil sending unit on my 3.4L 2002 chevy impala

Location for OIL PRESSURE SENSOR'S are, on Engine BLOCK At 90 degree angle BEHIND OIL FILTER , And One Just Above the Starter Poking out Same Direction as OIL FILTER, I would Suggest that you Replace Both at the same time, this IS NOT MANDATORY, But I have found it to be a time-saver and Sometimes it IS Necessary to replace them Both. I Speak from 30 years to date of Experience turning them Wrenches LoL.

Low to no oil in 2002 Impala. No even 3000 miles.

If you are close to 3000 miles, change oil. Low oil will overheat and change chemically. While under there, take a look around and see where or if oil is leaking anywhere (should not be hard to find) After changing, run and check again while running. Providing you aren't getting a lot of smoke out the back, (burning it) likely you will find a leak, then fix it!
good luck

Change oil light stays on longer than usual

If the light came on almost immediately after the oil change it is very possible that the oil filter was incorrectly installed and not seated properly. This would be the most common problem if it occured almost immediately after the oil change, and you have never had this problem. It is very easy to do that is why when you are changing oil and putting the new filter back on it is vitally important to make sure that it is on properly. Once the filter is on the filter post you should actually be able to "spin" it fairly easily until it is all the way on. If it does not seem to go easily it is not properly seated.
what you are probably smelling is any oil coming out that may be making contact with hot engine parts. I can't be 100% certain that this is your problem but it is one possibility. The only way to correct this if it is your problem is to re-do the oil change, or at a minimum have the filter re-installed or a new one installed correctly. Make sure the oil afterwards is at the proper level because some is going to leak out when you take the filter off. Good luck
