My 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback. Started car, moved my automatic shift lever and there is NO movement. Seems like a connector pin fell off. Anyone know how to check this. Normally I feel resistance when sliding the shift lever, but this morning absolutely no resistance. Is there a connector pin that can be easily replaced from inside car, or does it have to be from underneath the car. Where can I find a 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback (2.2) diagram of shifter mechanism

i had the same problem with my 1996 subaru legacy grand wagon, which is identical to yours.it had a cracked head, the gasket was fine.not cheap to get done but id get it done now before more serious damage is done.
TRY CHECKING THE TERMINAL CABLES ON THE BATTERY SEE IF THEY ARE LOOSE OR NEED A GOOD CLEANING OR CHECK FOR ANY LOOSE FUSES AT THE FUSE BOX OR ANY CORROSION ON THE END OF FUSES.
You've got to assume that the trans oil change is unrelated. With the key in the run position see if the wipers work, if not the battery is dead. Otherwise, try rocking the car back and forth while in park and then hope for a miracle. If all fails, get out the volt meter and start measuring voltages at the starter and the power pack (coil).
cheak your fluid level in your transmission as if it is low it wont go into gear properly you will move it from park or neutral to a gear it can take a while before it will kick into gear if you top up the fluid that should fix the problem if it still does it after this take it to a tranmission specalist and have it serviced as the bands may be streched
Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.
