Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE

The engine overheats and I loose coolant however if I idle the engine until it overheats and put cardboard under the engine i do not find alot of liquid underneath

If you have overheating problem, it can lead to multiple issues. You may be running on low coolant that's why the vehicle overheats. If that's the case, please add coolant and make sure that it sits on the right level, too much coolant can cause overheating too for coolant will overflow.


The vehicle may have a faulty or worn out radiator blower motor that's why it overheats. If that's the case then you will need a blower motor replacement to resolve the issue.


If the radiator is clogged with dirt and rusts this issue occurs too. The coolant doesn't flow normally on the cooling system if it's clogged. If that's the case, I strongly suggest that you have the radiator flushed to drain out dirt and rusts. If you think that the radiator served you enough then it's better to have it replaced.


Please do check the radiator hoses, If you have worn out hoses it can cause coolant leakage which can result to overheating. A tiny hole is good enough for the vehicle to overheat.


A faulty thermostat sensor can cause the issue too. If you have worn out thermostat, the fan may not trigger that's why the fan won't work when under stressed conditions. A blown radiator blower fuse can cause this issue too so I suggest that you check the radiator blower fuse and replace it when necessary. What causes the radiator blower fan fuse to blow? It's because of a failing radiator blower motor, If that's the case have the radiator blower fan motor replaced.


If the fluid in radiator doesn't circulate then it means that you have a blown head gasket or a faulty water pump. I suggest that you go for the water pump replacement first specially if you think that it's near the end of it's service life. Usually, water pops out the radiator when engine is reved (a sign of faulty water pump and possible blown head gasket).

2006 Equinox. Losing water. Over heats. Is this a thermostat or water pump problem??


Depends on where the coolant is going.
If it is an external leak it could be a leaking water pump. If there are no external leaks and you are loosing coolant, it could be a blown head gasket. Especially if the engine has already overheated once.
A sticking thermostat would cause the engine to overheat and then loose coolant from the overflow tank. But not until it overheats.

How do i put water in my radiator?


you need to replace thermostat and radiator cap.look under hood around engine compartment.look for a radiator cap near radiator,add 50/50 antifreeze and water to coolant system to bring up boiling point.pure water will cause engine run hotter because water evaporate away,remove radiator pour coolant in the radiator until coolant stop dropping in the radiator now some vechicle pour coolant in the coolant overflow jug,pour coolant until coolant level stop dropping and the coolant level stay at cold full mark.start engie let idle few minutes, watch coolant level in radiator if coolant start dropping add more coolant, when coolant level stop dropping put radiator cap back on let engine idle until both top radaitor hose and bottom coolant hose get warm turn off engine wait until it get cool then take a large rag slightly open radiator just a litle at a time to keep from getting scaled.once radiator remove add more coolant if low,put radiator cap back on start the engine let it idle watch the temp gauge if temperature gauge going hot zone stop engine wait until cool then add more coolant,keep doing this until engine stop overheating going into hot zone and coolant level stop dropping,make the coolant overflow jug coolant level stay at full cold mark, dont let jug run empty if so air will get in the coolant system causing engine to overheat.

No my alero is overheating. I have replaced the thermostat and waterpump and put a new cap on reservior and im losing coolant out the overflow

CAR OVERHEATING FIRST CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT IN THE RADIATOR COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG.IF COOLANT LEVEL IN OVERFLOW JUG LOW REFILL ADD COOLANT BACK TO THE FULL COLD MARK.PUT RADAITOR CAP ON COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG START ENGINE LET IT IDLE UNTIL IT OPERATING TEMPERATURE.MAKE SURE TOP RADIATOR HOSE GETTING HOT WHILE ENGINE WARM UP.IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE DONT GET HOT WHILE ENGINE IDLING YOUR THERMOSTAT COULD BE STUCK CLOSE CAUSING CAR TO OVERHEAT.IF TOP HOSE IS GETTING HOT.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE FOR LEAKS.CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR CORES AND PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS.IF ALL IS GOOD ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE, COOLANT FANS NOT COMING ON.COULD HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR BLOWN COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.COULD HAVE PCM FAULT.MAKE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS AND WIRING NOT DAMAGE OR BROKEN.

Car starts to overheat at idle - returns to normal temp when driving ,elec cooling fan works. could it be something as simple as rad. cap?loosing cooling fluid, but no apparent leaks.


If it overheats unless you are moving, there is an airflow deficit.

If the switch to run the fan does not turn it on until the engine is too hot, then you probably need a new fan switch.

I might think that the fan only covers a portion of the radiator, and there is only sufficient cooling surface area when the whole radiator is involved, but the fact that moving the car generates so much more heat than idling does would seem to counter that idea.

If you were losing (not loosing) coolant, there would be problems while driving as well.

It is also possible that your radiator's coolant flow is barely adequate, due to clogging. It might be a good idea to have that professionally checked.

I have a 2005 suzuki forenza.. I loose coolant like its nothing no signs of leak.. Low rough idle..I replaced the plugs and wires and 02 sensor Engine light flashes at idle and stops flashing but remains...


Check your oil----is it very high? Put a piece of cardboard under your car overnight, see if you have any leaks externally. If not, then you have an internal leak, which indicates a blown head gasket.

Sometimes the pipe that runs under the intake will leak. Can you smell antifreeze burning while you are driving? Another way to tell, is to let the vehicle run with the cap off. IF you get alot of bubbles out of the radiator, you have a cracked head, or a bad head gasket which is also a fairly common problem. It will push the antifreeze out of the radiator, and cause it to overheat.

turn off radio so you wont lose code.disconnect negative battery cable.remove drive belt.get a drain pan to catch coolant.place it under the radiator.then open the radiator drain on the lower right side of radiator.then remove coolant pressure cap and open thermostat bleed valve.BESURE TO PUT COOLANT SOME WHERE SAFE .BECAUSE KIDS AND PETS WILL DRANK IT.know you going to have to move the timing belt.besure to get your engine on TDC AT NUMBER 1 FIRING POSITION.REMOVE THE WATER PUMP BOLTS.AND PUMP.THROW AWAY THE O-RING SEAL.CLEAN GASKET SURFACE DO NOT SCRATCH.INSTALL NEW O-RING DIP IT IN COOLANT.DONT GET DIRT OR GREASE ON IT OR IT WILL LEAK.THEN YOU PUT .PUMP AND O-RING TO THE ENGINE BLOCK.INSTALL THE MOUNTING BOLTS.TORQUE TO 105 INCH POUNDS.THEN YOUR TURN PUMP WITH HANDS MAKE ITS NOT TO TIGHT AND CLEAR.
