I assume you have checked the cooling system to ensure that first that it is full of coolant and second that there are no leaks and the radiator cap is in good condition. The heater hoses and those pesky little bypass hoses in the cooling system tend to go hard and split if they are over 10 years old, allowing coolant loss. If there are no leaks or air locks, the over heating could also be caused by a clogged radiator (more than 15% restriction in the radiator flow capacity will cause overheating problems), a faulty water pump or as you suspect, a faulty thermostat.
If there are no leaks but undetected loss of coolant, then it could indicate a problem with the head gasket (Usually caused by allowing engine to become excessively overheated when cooling system has run dry) allowing high pressure combustion gases into the engine water jacket, which super heats the coolant which then boils off, and is released via the cap.
If unsure take vehicle to cooling system specialist and have them do a pressure test and more thorough diagnosis.

Connie, Were the radiator, water pump and thermostat replaced to try and fix the over heat issue or as maintenance. Engine overheating can be caused by a lot of things, Leak in cooling system, air in system, bad rad. cap, slipping belt, faulty thermostat or installed upside down, faulty water pump, plugged radiator (inside/outside), collapsing rad hose, faulty cooling fan, leaking head gasket, sludge plugging engine water passages, poorly tuned engine, etc..
Take into a good shop for diagnoses and estimate for repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

OVERHEATING

Thermostat is probably bad.

Without knowing what year your car is, the thermostat could be here:

.To test the thermostat, put it in a pot of boiling water. If it clicks, it works. If not, then replace it.

My 1996 toyota avalon is overheating. There are no leaks, thermostat is new, radiator is new and has been flushed, changed the fan relay. Don't know why its overheating.

Is the fan coming on? If not, possible lower radiator fan switch/sensor? No leaks... So overflow tanks level stays stable? How do you know it is overheating? Elevated temp guage? Engine smells overheated? Both? We need more info.

What can cause overheating in a 2000 pontiac sunfire

Replace the thermostat. It will be fine after that. I know thats what everyone says anytime there is an overheating problem but in this case with the way the system works and it has been working fine up to this point, it's gonna be the thermostat.

1999 dodge b2500 van is overheating.

I know this solution sounds kinda dumb but if you just replaced the thermostat I would check to make sure the thermostat is installed the correct way. I replaced the entire cooling system on one of my vehicles once and it still overheated....I put the thermostat in backwards. Turned it around and problem solved. Hope this helps and please don't forget to rate me.
