You may have a fluid leak that has left the pan next to empty. check the fluid level, and add if needed. VW need specific tranny fluid. Mobil 1 Dex III will work though.

97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

My2001 vw jetta manual transmission wont come out of 3rd gear and i dont know why

Does the shifter feel loose? Does it drive in neutral or does it lock in two gears if you select a different gear? I'm trying to determine if it is a transmission problem or a shifter problem. It is likely a shifter problem.

Inside the transmission case above the pan. You should probably let a transmission mechanic handle this one.

97 vw jetta gls manual transmission problems !?!?

It sounds pretty right on..
I mean - its unlikely that reverse would be torn up - unless some one grinded the heck out of it.. Or had trouble getting it in & slammed it in maybe breaking a few teath..

Mt 1997 vw jetta gls won't go in any gears

Hello;
If your Jetta is a manual transmission, the clutch disc facing is probably gone. If it is an automatic, there are a number of things to check. Is transmission full of fluid? Does fluid smell burnt? Is there metal inside the oil pan? Hope this helps and rate me high.
Thanks;

you should start by checking your brake saftey switch. you have to apply the brake when shifting from park if it is bad it will not allow you to shifft from park.try the cheapest easiest first.

Finding Thermostat on 98 Jetta GLS

Its to the right of the water pump towards the bottom of the engine.. Follow your lower radiator hose. Make sure to get some G12 coolant from VW before you do it. If you mix the coolants they turn into a gel that will cause you to overheat.

Reverse

98 Jetta GLS  reverse gear can lose teeth and "pop" out of gear especially when backup up an incline.  Dealer fixed it once under warranty but claimed driver misuse.  Problem occurred again and we don't want a costly rebuilt transmission.
