Good Evening, I have run into this a time before there are a couple places, one of course in the engine compartment by the firewall, the second location is behind the glovebox. It is in either one place or another, I hope this helps and please feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

How do I set the distributor timing on a 89 Camaro 5.0 engine


Start the engine and let it get up to operating temperature.

Shut off engine.

There should be a brown or tan colored wire located inside of the passenger compartment. It should be under the front edge of the carpet, under the dash, in front of the passenger side foot well.

Unplug the brown wire. There should be a connector in the middle of the wire itself.

Connect timing light to the number 1 cylinder plug wire (front cylinder on driver side).

Start the engine.

Set the timing to the specs. I believe it should be 0° before top dead center. In other words, 0° advanced or non-advanced (Apparently the PC police of fix-ya considers re-tar-dead profanity).
Hence the "non-advanced" term.

Shut off engine.

Disconnect timing light.

Reconnect the brown/tan wire under the carpet.

Restart engine. The computer will take over from there.

Where can I find an engine compartment diagram


is the vehicle able to move ? if so i'd take to a dealer who has the same model and have a look too see the undamaged wires etc as you would be better off with a new loom than trying to repair the wires if it is only at the peripheral end of the electrical system

It appears that you have an electrical short somewhere. If you are mechanically inclined and have hours of time and electrical knowledge, good luck! Sometimes these problems can be easily found where the wiring harness runs through the firewall from the fuse panel under the dash to the engine compartment relay box. Vibrations of the engine over time on a vehicle over 10 years old will chafe the wires over time on places where the wires lay over body frame components. Also heat and time on a cars wiring harness over a decade can damage wiring in the engine compartment or along exhaust manifold underneath. Try looking in those places for visible damage before tearing out all the interior or dash.

I have a 1994 Chev K1500 with a 5.7. I need to set the timing but the manual says to unplug the EST. The manual says the EST is in the panel inside the engine compartment on the firewall but I can not find...


the est wire is located on the passenger side on firewall behind a plastic cover in the shape of a T in the engine compartment.it is a single wire with a connector and is a tan wire with a black stripe on it.this is the wire you disconnect to set timing,you may have to pull it out of the wiring loom for easier access

Lack of power seems to be a problem with the exhaust, shaky idle


When was the last time plugs, plug wires cap/s rotor/s and coilc were replaced? I would try that first. Also you have the starting year when mercedes was told by the US to use biodegradable insulation that was "cooked" by engine compartment heat. Try buymbparts.com for engine wiring harness and lower engine wiring harness to replace them.

Engine compartment got wet now it is missing and


Let a fan blow in the engine compartment for a long while. More importantly, the ignition wiring and plugs need to be dried out. Trace spark plug wires back to their source.Use WD 40 or a wire dry spray (auto parts store). Unplug spark plug wires and spray. Unplug ignition module wires and spray. Unplug all electrical plugs and spray. Also use a air dryer to remove moisture, and to dry out wires.

Found 2 pin orange/black connector on ~2" wire in rear driver's side engine compartment...


the orange and black wire is it on the fire wall on passenger side in engine compartment? if is the case it is used for setting timing it's a shunt wire.

How to check and adjust the timing
Disconnect the tan/black wire EST (electronic spark timing) by-pass connector located near the heater housing in the engine compartment on the S/T series, or near the distributor on all other V-6 models. Do not disconnect the four- (4) wire connector at distributor. Connect the timing light to the No. 1 spark plug wire. Check timing and adjust to "0" degrees BTDC. With the engine off, reconnect the EST by-pass connector and clear the ECM trouble codes by disconnecting the battery.
