but if ripped from the base of the ignition
normal soldering may not be good enough

How do I switch my broken ignition in my car to a flip switch ignition

Why don't you just buy a new ignition switch and put it back together the way it was originally designed instead of "rigging" something that will probably end up burning your car to the ground?

If you reverse the wires on an alternator it becomes a motor(driven by battery power)easily checked,You can only replace brushes(do not undercut commutator)

The coil should have 3 wires connected to it. One is the big HT lead, and then there are two small wires, one on either side of the coil. One of the wires is for the constant 12volt power source, the other is the control wire. With the ignition switched on, you should be able to read 12volts at one of these wires.

The other wire is the control wire, it receives pulses from the ignition module that is inside the distributor. Effectively this switches the output of the coil on and off, and controls when the spark plug will fire. It is difficult to detect these pulses without proper equipment, but a multimeter set to AC might be able to detect the presence of an AC voltage (although it probably wont accurately display the correct voltage), which would indicate that the ignition module is working.

If the pulses are not present at the input of the coil, then your ignition module is probably the culprit.

Open the distributor, and remove the rotor button. There is a round plastic cover over the ignition module, which must be removed. The ignition module is semi circular, and has four wires attached to it, via small screws. Take note of the location of each wire, and unscrew each one. The ignition module can be unscrewed with a phillips head screw driver, and removed. When fitting the replacement module, you must cover it with the heat sink compound that is supplied with the new module (mechanics sometimes refer to this compound as ignition module grease). Without the heat sink compound, the new module will over heat, and burn out. You should be able to replace the module in 15 minutes, it is very easy to do.

Ignition switch for a 74 vw super beetle

The plastic ignition switch is held in with a philips screw. You will need to remove the ignition lock cylinder to get to it. A easy way to check is to unplug the wires going into the back of the lock housing and plug in the new switch, without removing anything.

On a 1996 vw golf the only way i can start it is to hook a wire from the hot to a jumper on the starter selinod and it makes it engage but if i hook the jumper wire up normally nothing happens when i turn...

Hello, I take it you twist the key to start and nothing? I repaired my Postmans Vw with the same problem. Firstly it is common and the dealer way of solving is to replace the whole ignition barrel. However I went to Maplins bought a 10 amp push to make flush fitting switch and grafted it into the wire from the ignition switch that goes to the one You use to hot wire the starter you can fuse it too to be safe. Now he has a Vw that looks like the New Bmw Mini for push button starting.
There You Go! Problem solved.
