Question about 1986 Chevrolet Chevy

2 Answers

I have a 1987 Chevy V10/Silverado 4x4 1/2 ton. The past two months has been sporadically sputtering like misfiring.I changed the Plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor.Kinda helped but still sputtered from time to time.So then I change the ignition coil.Ran like a champ for like 10 min.But then just shut off.The ECM fuse had blown.Stuck another one in,but then it's like sputtering real bad, almost shuts off when putting in gear, and has massive power loss. And ,eventually will blow the fuse again..I also changed the ignition control module,to no avail..I'm stuck!

It has plenty of gas,and have put in several fuel system treatments the past few months. It's definitely getting fuel, before I knew the fuse had blown, trying to start it,you could smell the gas.I've checked and rechecked the connections as far as plug wires on the cap, firing order, and connections to the coil and module.I don't have a volt meter so I guess I'm stuck until I could get one.And the fuse blowing has me thinking it's a short, but not sure where to even begin..

I have a 1987 Chevy V10/Silverado 4x4 1/2 ton. 5.7 350.The past two months has been sporadically sputtering like misfiring.I changed the Plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor.Kinda helped but still sputtered from time to time.So then I change the ignition coil.Ran like a champ for like 10 min.But then just shut off.The ECM fuse had blown.Stuck another one in,but then it's like sputtering real bad, almost shuts off when putting in gear, and has massive power loss. And ,eventually will blow the fuse again..I also changed the ignition control module,to no avail..I'm stuck!

I haven't ran diagnostics on it. I don't have any sort of reader and I can't drive it anywhere because the fuse will blow in a matter of minutes,I'm not sure about the grounds on the ECM,Is the Ignition control module the same thing? Its crazy how it ran really strong for a few minutes after I changed the coil, then blew the ecm fuse and it's had nothing but problems since,

What codes is the ecm logging?
There are several things that you need to check.
1. The TPS on the throttle body
2. The ground connections on the ecm
3. The oxygen sensors.
4. The runout in the rotor shaft to the distributor.

You might be able to borrow a code reader or get an inexpensive one at autozone or checker or advance autoparts. The ECM is the computer and is not the ignition module. That could be bad too.

I agree that you have replaced all the possible causes for car misfiring, but did you checked voltages at all the parts. It should show exact 12 volts. If its less then that then there is a short in the connections or the parts replaced are not connected properly.Check out all the ignition coil/injectors one by one ,this will confirm the fault. Also get the fuel pressure checked. If its less then fuel pump and fuel filter needs to be replaced.---------
The car starts but misses and runs very bad this indicates that an ignition coil or spark plug may be failing or a fuel injector may be failing. Also check in the gas tank .Is the car running out of gas. Check if car is running out of gas or low on gas , dirt in the bottom of the fuel tank, clogged fuel filter, and clogged injectors. Replace fuel filter and pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank.If all the above mentioned possibilities checked out OK. Then Get the car scanned at diagnosis center. If the problem repeats again n again then its advisable to get car scanned at diagnosis center to get error codes, At diagnosis center you will receive the error code.As per the error code it will detect the exact faulty part in the car due to which the problem is occurring. For more help :--- at www.autozone.com its absolutely free to get car scanned.
--------------------Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

97 chevy 1500 sputters at idle in gear can feel it a little while driving no cat. past 2 years run bank1 lean code plugs clean HELP

If the engine is misfiring the check engine light would be on and blinking and the engine control module (PCM) would store a fault code or codes for the cylinders that are misfiring. A lean code will not cause a misfire unless the engine has a vacuum leak most often at the intake manifold gaskets. A misfire code looks like this:

P0300-P0306 for 6 cylinder and P0300-P0308 for a V8.
P0300 indicated a random engine misfire, this can be caused by all kinds of issues.

Idles ok backfires thru exhaust under a load

Since it is so old, Start with a compression test. 90lbs is about minimal. The cylinders should be with in 10% of each other. If your there or lower, Time to retire or rebuild this engine. This part here will save you time, trouble and money into an engine that won't be any better when your done.

I need to know how to replace a coil on a 350 , 5.5 engine for a 1987 chevy Silverado V10

There is no coil in a distributor . That will be the ignition module . The coil will be external and can be found by following the centre ht lead from the distributor back. remove the distributor cap and rotor button --undo any small screws that hold the module in and lift out.

2002 Chevy silverado, at speeds of 60+ mph, it feels like the transmission slips or it sputters(hesitates), but only at high speeds

Are you certain that it is the transmission and not the engine misfiring? I would recommend scanning your onboard computer network to BEGIN proper diagnosis.

I need a steering coloum for a 1982 chevy half ton two wheel drive. I would like to know whitch years will interchange?

You should be able to get one from 1980-1987. The model chqanged in 1988. It's quite possible that pre 1980 will also fit since the change in1980 was mostly cosmetic. Hope this helps.
