I am rebuilding my 1993 chevy pickup truck for my grandson. I needed to replace the turn signal switch and by mistake I took the column top off where the ignition key is and I cannot figure out how to put it back together.

  • murrayl2 Aug 28, 2010

My problem is I took apart the housing that houses the key lock, and now I cannot get the key to spring back. When I took it apart the pieces went everywhere. I believe I have found all of the pieces, and have tried to put the housing back together, but I cannot get the key to spring back off of START.

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  1. Remove the turn signal switch. It is not necessary to completely remove the switch from the column. Pull the switch rearward far enough to slip it over the end of the shaft, but do not pull the harness out of the column.
  2. Turn the lock to Run.
  3. If necessary, remove the ignition key.
  4. If equipped, remove the buzzer switch assembly.
  5. Remove the lock retaining screw and remove the lock cylinder.I need a diagram of - 33880a9.jpg

    To install:

    1. Rotate the key to the stop while holding onto the cylinder.

    2. Push the lock all the way in.

    3. Install the screw. Tighten the screw to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm) for regular columns, 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) for tilt columns.

    4. Install the turn signal switch and the steering wheel.

    WARNING
If the retaining screw is dropped on removal, it may fall into the column, requiring complete disassembly of the column to retrieve the screw.

  • Rene J Solis Aug 28, 2010

I read your request again, what you need is a diagram of the Ignition Cylinder/Lock. You will not find one, unless you call the factory and have one sent. The good news are that the Ignition cylinder/lock w/2 keys is available at AutoZone or other auto parts stores for $12.99.

To remove and replace the key lock assembly. In order to remove it, you'll need to disassemble the column past the turn signal and multi-function switches. There will be a torx screw at the bottom part of the lock hole. If you find no screw, then look for a hole for the notch to clip. It will also be located toward the bottom of the key lock hole. STEERING COLUMN LOCK
1.Remove steering wheel and lock plate. Lift directional signal switch up far enough to slip over end of shaft. It is not necessary to remove switch entirely. 2.Place key in lock cylinder and rotate to "RUN" position. Remove lock retaining screw being careful not to drop screw down column. Rotate lock cylinder to align cylinder key with keyway in housing. Pull cylinder from housing.
Fig. 4: Removing Lock Cylinder Assembly. Align cylinder key with keyway in housing.
3.To install, hold lock cylinder and rotate key clockwise to stop. Align cylinder key and housing keyway and insert cylinder. Complete assembly by reversing removal procedure.

the rod to the switch at the middle of the column has a spring built into it. that rod connects to the rack. that connects to the plastic sector gear which goes behind the lock cylinder. the spring your asking about goes as a preload spring (has a u shape bend) which attaches to the rack

it is on the top of the steering column in the truck cab.remove battery cables. remove the lower portion of you dash.loosen the bolts on the plate that holds your column up to the dash. the column will pull down some. you may have a gear indicator tab/string that needs to be undone. remove column clamp blots all the way. the switch is on the top, it has a rod that moves and is postioned on the column. remove old switch, install new switch in th position where the old on was
