I would stop driving it until you have a trans shop check it out.
If you have no record of fluid changes over the years or it has 120,000 miles on it,you may figure it will need to be rebuilt.
Maybe able to make an adjustment, but I wouldn't have high hopes on it.

What is the second drive gear for

The first one is over drive and the second is drive. It is best to just use overdrive when on the parkway and drive on slower back roads when there is hills and stop and go traffic. Overdrive is a higher gear.

TRANSMISSION COMES OUT OF DRIVE WHEN I STOP THE CAR

Start with a complete flush of the trany and torque converter, and a filter replace. That should fix the problem, but the Taurus has a bad reputation for trany's going out frequently.

94 tauras AT once warmed up trans will drop out gear at a stop

This is a common problem. You have a cracked forward clutch piston. Ford made this part out of aluminum. The replacements are steel. But you have to disassemble the transmission to install it. ( I know you said Rev too, In the AXODE trans, the forward clutch is on in 1st and reverse)
