Question about 2003 Toyota Tundra

2 Answers

My 2003 toyota tundra which is super charge has been having starting issues since i bought it in 2007. The truck wont start and i unplug the wires going to the throutle body and plug them back in. sometimes it will start up fine but throws codes for all 8 ignition coils. Other times it will start but wont go any higher that 2000 rpms. When your not on the throtle it pulse and struggles to run. Ill turn it off and on a few times then usually after three times it starts up nomal still throwing the same codes. A shop narrowed it down to coils 5 and 7 which i replaced then it only threw a code for coil 5 which i replace with another new one. The shop said the computer could be pick up coils 4 or 6 and i had order 4 coils so i replaced those as well. Now its throwing a code for 5,7 and 2, which i never touched coil two. I have replaced the starter, starter rely, cam 1, 4 coils the plugs twice. im just flat our lost on this. Could it be the wire harness or the computer? Thanks for your time Carson Reeder

i have checked the battery many times, even replace a perfectly good battery. The problem is not consistant, it generally happens when its cold or sits for a few days. Once the truck is warm it doesn't seem to have any issues starting. But at the same time it has just shut off on me while i was driving down the road. once off road, I hit a big pot hole and the other two times on the high way and hit nothing, I was going around 55 and it just flat turned off. I just changed the spark plugs and i replace four of the coils. two of the coils that i replaced are still throwing codes. There is plenty of fuel in the truck and i have ran fuel injector clean threw it multipul times. The fuel filter has been replace recently but the fuel pump i have not checked. but the truck has been doing the same thing for three years now. I can get to start and run every times i just have to pop the hood and mess with the main wires going into the throtle body. it works every time i un plug that an plug it back in, plus the throtle body itselve makes a very high pitch noise. I have manly reset the throtle body, someone suggested that to me. but im still stuck

The igniton module controls the coils and the engine computer controls the engine module
It sounds like one of these two are at fault

There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--
1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.
2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.
3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.
4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.
5) If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it’s a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.
The car starts but misses and runs very bad this indicates that an ignition coil or spark plug may be failing or a fuel injector may be failing. Also check in the gas tank .Is the car running out of gas. Check if car is running out of gas or low on gas , dirt in the bottom of the fuel tank, clogged fuel filter, and clogged injectors. Replace fuel filter and pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. If all the possibilities are checked and replaced ok, then yes it can be wire harness or the computer issue.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

The stater on my 2007 tundra 5.7 will spin but not engage, replaced starter and the issues starts as soon as you connect the battery what could cause this problem

It sounds like you might have a bendix spring problem or you don;t have the wires connected to the right terminals on the starter.

Did you check for an inertia switch. Most vehicles have an inertia switch installed in the fuel pump circuit that cuts off the fuel pump when involved in an accident.

Anti theft system bypass

Other than just bypassing the whole security system {cutting and splicing wires} 2 things, check the battery in the remote, if that still fails take the remote to the dealer {Oriely Autos also have remote testers} and ask them to test it for you, saves you pulling wires and shorting the system out completely. good luck.

2003 toyota tundra wont start after accident it wants to start, sometimes it would start 4 couple seconds and dies. it does have a spark.

if it was after an accident, look in owners manual and see if there is a fuel cut off switch of some sort. Sounds like this is the case.if nothing said in manual call a dealer and ask or look on line. Hope this helps
