I have a 2000 Chrysler 2.4L auto in which the speedometer stopped working. It will also not upshift past second gear. I have come to the conclusion that the speed sensor is damaged, and the transmission put itself in limp mode. I have taken the cover off the wheel and can see the tan sensor on the side of the transmission. Before I remove it, I would like to know of any complications I may run into. Is there a chance of fluid spillage when I inscrew this? Will the engine automatically reset itself once the new sensor is detected. If this does not fix the problem, what would be the next step?

SOURCE: Hi, Got a Chrysler Voyager 3.3

How is your transmission shifting?
the reason I ask is because your code is a communication loss code between the TCM and the other module(s). It's not uncommon for the wiring problems to develop in the harness that runs from the PCM in front of the battery to the TCM on the Pass side inner fender. Look around where the harness is tie strapped to the transmission pan. it's common for the wires to break or be full of water especially after somebody has had the pan off or the transmission has been removed for repair. Can also be a wiring problem right at the PCM or TCM connector or the TCM itself TCM is transmission control module)
although not as likely as a wiring issue.
when communication is lost the transmission will go into limp mode which is 2nd gear and stay there. Sometimes it will come back every time the van is shut off. Not an easy fix but on the plus side not an overly expensive one if you're gonna tackle it yourself. You'll need a scanner that will give you input and output speed sensor readings and a wiring diagram. TCM's should be reasonably cheap used or even new, not sure haven't priced one in forever and the wrecking yard are full of them and even the connector(s) should they be required

SOURCE: The transmission appears to be stuck in "limp-in"

The Transmission Relay is in the Power Distribution Box. It's one of the 3 smaller identical relays underneath the row of 7 larger identical relays. It's the top one immediately below the larger relays. Between the Park Lamp(Larger Relay) & Fuel Pump (Smaller Relay).

Fuse #14 is also for the Transmission Relay.

2000 cirrus want change gears goes in drive and reverse inside on the dash where it tells you what gear you in all has squares around them speedometer doesn't work

Sounds like a speed sensor, I will look into that, but if the speedometer isn't working, its either cable, or electronic. Being a 2000, I'm guessing electronic. Chrysler have a lot of electronics on the transmission, as they are electronic themselves. I had an alternator go bad and my battery died, and the car wouldn't shift, it actually down shifted while driving. Have your battery and alternator checked first, then sensors. Like shift silinoid, speed sensor etc.

Where is the speed sensor located on Dodge Ram 2000?

Chrysler products have a limp mode that will not shift past second gear when the computer senses a transmission problem. A failed speedometer will do it.

My autostick chysler 300M will not manually downshift

That may be a safety feature, Ron - it SHOULD refuse to downshift if downshifting would cause excessively high engine RPMs.

I have a 1999 Chrysler 300M. Simultaneously, the Check Engine light came on, the speedometer stopped working, and the car doesn't shift out of 2nd gear. What's the likely problem?

these vehicles have alot of problems with the tcm( tranmission control module) internal failures of trans speed sensors. your car is currently in "limp in mode" to protect your trasmission!!!

Chrysler lhs transmission wont shift and my speedometer isnt working but all the other instruments are. what could it be?

It may be your speed sensor. When the speed sensor is not working, the speedometer will not work, the car will not shift past second gear, and the engine light should appear.

Hi, I've got a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus LXi 2.5L and it's been acting strange lately. When in forward gear, it remains in 2nd gear and will not down/upshift (Park, neutral, reverse works fine). The speedometer...

If your transmission is leaking, that would explain the transmission not wanting to shift into other gears. An automatic transmission works off of pressure and when enough pressure builds up the valve body will switch to another gear. The most common places that a front wheel drive transmission will leak is the axle seals, there are two of them, one for each of the front axles. Another problem area is the transmission pan gasket and the transmission lines. None of which are really a hard fix. Do not drive the car if with the transmission fluid level low as you will damage the transmission and will be looking at one heck of a repair bill. Also, make sure that you use dex/merc transmission fluid that is approved for your cars transmission. There are several different brands and types available and although they are all automatic transmission fluids, there is a significant difference in them.
