    the malibu is a 6. the starter went out on my girls car. she was told gm made 2 different starter for this car. i have looked at all the major auto parts wweb sites and i only find one. a gear reduction with 9 tooth gear

I don't know what the confuusion is here, there is but one starter, here is the part number from ACDelco

How to replace the ignition solinoid in a 2002 Chevy Malibu? I know the problem but I can't seem to get the wiring detached from the switch.


Most people replace the starter/solenoid assy. because the solenoid is not sold separately. I believe this is you case. Below is a good option.

First disconnect the battery negative(GND) cable. Remove the two bolts which hold the starter to the block. Careful not to let it drop and hit you in the head, Unbolt the small signal wire to the solenoid and then the large red starter cable which goes to the battery +. Installation is reverse procedure.

HOW DO HOME TEST A STARTER ON 2002 CHEVY MALIBU


Remove the starter and jump the connections to a Battery to see if it spins. Make sure you connect positive to the positve end and the neg to the neg end. Hope this helps.
