Hi! Have you tried looking on the junkyard? Nowadays the gear shift is really hard to find but you may find one on a junkyard near you. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Original spares of this kind are difficult to find, you may have to use universal OEM replacements.

Here two shifters that should work on 1986 Bronco II:

Manual tranny:Universal - Spectre Shifter - Universal product

Auto tranny:B&M Shifter - Universal product

Here instead the only original parts available (manual):

Input Shaft Bearing
Input Shaft Seal
Shifter Extension
Output Shaft Bearing

My 1991 Ford e350 automatic transmission won't shift into gear

Check the emc on the tranny. Ford and chevy have a problem with the location of where the tranny ecm is located. It it located where water soaks it. Also, check the tranny fluid, if it out it won't shift into gear.

Sometimes the transmission will not shift

Make sure fluid level is correct. Level ground, shift through the gears, back in park, check fluid. If ok, could be transmission range sensor located on top of the transmission, connected to the shift cable linkage. 60 bucks and a few bolts. Make sure its aligned right when installing.

Will not shift out of 2nd gear

Tranny most likely shot. I believe yours is a T-5, I had the same issue years back but in 3rd gear. Usually the clutch going out is a gradual thing. So I would have a tranny shop look at it. Maybe find a cheap rebuilt tranny for ya.Look online or a trusted shop.

Wont shift out of first gear , put 2 quarts of fluid in and still wont change out of first. 1986 ford tempo

You fill it until the fluid leve is in the cross hatch imprint on the transmission dipstick. Make sure the fluid has reached at least 175 F before you make the final level check.

Transmission problems

unfortunaly contours have crappy tranny's.. if you are having issues with it u can try to clean the sensor chip located on the tranny.. it may be dirty and not connecting well.. also it may not be your transmission after all.. you can go buy this plug.. basicly it tells the tranny to shift gears at a certin rpm its located on the top of you motor close to the radiator.. and if all fails.. looks like u will have to replace a transmission..
