Question about 1998 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

Hello, FixYa expert, I've owned my 1998 ford expedition for 12 years and have endured the problem of a failed leveling system for the second time. The first time the system failed, was directly related to loading the vehicle with deejay equipment which apparently overloaded the system. I've excepted responsibility. However, the second time was of no fault of mine; but, during a vacation with only a normal size five family (three kids and two adults) in tow and luggage on-board. Following this last event, due to the high cost of repairing the air suspension system, I decided to have the system switched shut-off. Unfortunately, when I took the vehicle in for rear a brake repair, the technician says following the repair of brakes, he inadvertently turned-on the suspension...thinking he or, someone else in the shop turned the suspension system off. The technician, filled the system to a height pass trim; and advised me to take the vehicle to a ford dealer for a complete diagnostic to determine if the system's computer is faulty by sending the wrong signals. I love my truck! But, I'm completely at a loss. The vehicle's rear end is down and, I'm now confused whether I have a air suspension problem or computer issue. PLEASE ADVISE

You could have blown air bags or shocks depending on what this one has. The motor that pumps the air may be leaking and not holding the air or the computer which can be tested with with scan tool. You could just have a different type of suspension put in it. They do make really nice riding shocks you could always use instead.

How do I fix this Pinging noise and lack of acceleration on my 1998 Ford Expedition?

As a vehicle ages, the timing gets off, and the Octane of fuel will compensate for an out of timing vehicle.
Bad gas is main culprit, also dirty/clogged fuel filter, or clogged carberetor or injectors!
Use a "GOOD" fuel system cleaner for the next 3 tankfuls, and use a higher octane fuel at the same time!!! This is important. After 3 tankfuls and 3 additions of a Fuel System Cleaner, go back to a lower octane fuel. Drive up a hill and see if the problem is gone. If not, then either take it to a mechanic and check timing, hopefully you replaced the fuel filter by then.

Hi, this actually sounds like your heating system may lack vacuum. The system is designed to fail in the defrost mode. Some vehicles shut down ac compressor under heavy acceleration, but you did not mention heavy throttle.

So, look for vacuum leaks, you may need to install a vacuum reservoir. You may have engine performance issues, causing low manifold vacuum, you may have a check valve that failed, so under acceleration, the vacuum is not shut off, but rather evacuated into the engine...

Hope it helps....

Check the fuse and relay for the compressor clutch. The clutch electrical winding could be open--check at the clutch electrical connection for 12 volts when the system is turned on. There is an interlock switch that prevents the compressor from being turned on if the system detects low freon level. Have that checked first, then worry about the electrics second. Hope this helps!

There may be a corrosive in the system. Flushing the system should be done at least every 2 years. Your vehicle is now 12 years old, but I have not seen a heater core go bad in 10 months, it may have been defective, and should have some type of warranty.
