The plug needs to go into the engine. The plug uses engine temp to actuate the valve. If you mean by pointing the end with the tip--that end always poins out of the engine.

My 1994 Camry started smoking and overheating after I heard a pop noise. What could this be

Smoking from the tailpipe or the engine bay? At this point it could be that a radiator hose failed and you have lost coolant, or that a head gasket is blown, both of which can make a noise.

More silent is the possible failure of a coolant temp sensor, thermostat, or radiator fan hydraulic drive (if fitted).

The worst is a blown head gasket, and a compression test will show this. A failed radiator hose and coolant loss will be obvious.

Water leaking thermostat housing

Drain the radiator to half full, and remove the top hose, oil filter, and thermostat housing (water inlet). Remove the thermostat and gasket, clean, and replace with a new gasket. Wire brush any scale off the thermostat housing and reinstall with a new hose as well. See here p247

Where do I find the thermostat in the 1995 Toyota Camry?

Follow the top radiator hose the the fitting that is slightly dome shaped. remove the hose and bolts from this fitting. Pull it off. you will see a disc with a copper colored slug and a bimetalilc spring assembly. That's your thermostat. Rember when replacing to point the springy end towards your engine block.

Need to change thormastat

follow your top radiator hose to your thermostat on the top of your engine. remove the 2 to 3 bolts holding thermo to engine. Clean both sufaces well where gasket sits. Point on thermostat goes towards radiator or into hose. Use high temp silicone for gasket as this works better than gasket given with thermostat.

Radiator fan on my 1994 toyota camry

there are actually 3 temp sensors. 1 is on the top of the engine that goes to temp gauge in dash has 1 wire. next to it is a 3 wire sensor for engine control and choke. on the bottom of the radiator next to the hose is a 2 wire sensor. loosen all 3 but leave connected. get engine hot past halfway point on dash gauge. with ac off disconnect 1 sensor at time. start with 2 wire under radiator. it takes the most abuse. fan will come on when you disconnect broken sensor. 2sensor must agree for fan to stay on till engine cools when turned off. note this is solution i used after verifying fuses, fuseable links and relays worked.WOO HOO! make sure you check both the fuse box under hood and fuse boxleft side of steering wheel my ECU fuse was inside my bros was outside.ECU B on my car goes to nothing and is under hood. Had it confused with ECU on wiring diagram.DOH!
