Question about 1996 GMC Safari

1 Answer

I replace my starter on my 96 gmc v6 safari and when I re-started the engine it started just fine and turn it off; then after about 3 minutes later I started it again but it started to smoke and found a wire (I believe the wire is from the starter to the positive) started to melt and turn off the engine by disconnecting the positive wire on the battery because I could not turn it off from the ignition. So, I disconnected the affected wire which connected from the starter to the positive (not directly to the battery but to a little small covered box near the battery) but having trouble separating the skinny melted wire that meets with the thicker wire towards the starter with another wire plug under the transmission and what cause the smoke?

GMC safari 1997, sometimes will not start. I turned the key, here a click sound but engine will not start. mechanic checked as below 1. battery was fully charged(mechanic said not a problem) 2....

your starter is grounded, replace it, it takes me half an hour to does it, been doing this 25 years, when a starter's bearing startes to fail, it grounds itself and messes the electric system. if you need to know how to do it yourself, just ask !

Once in a while my 2003 gmc safari will not start. i turn the key, here a click but engine will not crank. I wait for a while then starts normally. van has only 35,000 miles. could starter be bad already?

Could be bad starter. Miles don't matter, only how many times you start the car. I would first check for corroded or loose connections between battery and starter solenoid..

Starter problem

your starter might be getting stuck you might have it checked to see if it is working right but it would'nt hurt to have it replaced this doesn't cost much to have replaced.

Gmc safari van cranks over, but will not fire up or start.Have tried starter fluid and still no start. Has plenty of crank, but no start

I had the same problem with my 2000 GMC Safari two years ago....drove me CRAZY!

Sometimes it would start right up...other times it just would crank and not start.

It turned out to be a cracked coil....I found it by using a spray bottle with water in it, and "misting" the engine, at night....with the engine running. (On a night when it DID start!)

It took a while, but finally the hairline crack let in some water and the electrical short showed by a spark coming out of the coil.

I replaced the coil with a new one, and it has never "not started" since.

Evidently the coil cover gets brittle and develops small, hairline cracks due to heat from the engine. the way....I tested the coil it showed that it was fine!....but it took the "misting" at the find the spark "leaking" out.

Hard cold start 96 safari

Check fuel presure.I believe its 61 to 65 psi, with little or no drop off in ten minutes.V-6 access port for fuel presure is at left rear of engine,(remove dog house to access). Fuel pump is in fuel tank.Use AC Delco only, there is a updated wire harness conector for these.
