Question about 2004 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Nissan Altima and i had my oil changed and the service guy told me that i had a small leak around the oil filter. He actualy said it was inside the housing, it could easily be replaced, even though his company didnt do it. So im asking, where do i start and how do i replace this gasket or seal?

I think he is saying you have a gasket leak at the filter housing, you will need proper tools to do this and a catch can of sort when you remove the oil filter cause you will have oil drop down.

I would say do not tackle this problem if you have no tools and are uncertain on how to approach this repair on your own, take it to a Repair Shop that you know or a referral of a good repair shop in your area.

How do i come across the gasket? I have gone to several auto parts stores and no one has it. is this something that has to come from the manufacture?

  • Aki Aug 27, 2010

If no parts store has it might be the case, i would 1st off have an actual repair shop look into it, If im not mistaken this vehicle does not have a gasket hence no one can find it might be a leak from somewhere else and looks like its coming from taht region. Might cost you a little money but you will know if that service station was helping you out or they were not sure what the problem was.

I have an 03 Nissan Altima v6 it's leaking oil around the oil filter but it has a part I've never seen. It looks sort of like an oil filter adapter but it has 2 hoses coming off of it

That's part of the oil cooler. There are posts and videos online about replacing the o-ring. That engine/setup was used in other models also, so maybe a writeup on the murano or other vehicle could help as well.

I have a 2008 Nissan Altima and I took it today to have any oil change. I was told that I have a "bad oil cooler". I am female and I have very little knowledge of a cars structure unfortunately. What...

This sounds kind of odd. Most cars don't have an oil cooler. Usually trucks (especially with towing package) have an oil cooler. If the car is an automatic then you have a cooler for the transmission "oil" but it is usually part of the radiator. I would look around on line and first see if you can find a Nissan site that mentions this vehicle having an oil cooler. Unless your car is leaking oil or oil pressure reads way off center (if you have oil gauge in dash) I would be thinking you are not getting a correct answer. If car shows no major issue with oil I wouldn't be spending money on fixing an "oil" issue. Especially if car did not come with a dedicated oil cooler.

Think I need oil pan gasket

It's probably the front crank seal or the cam seal. Kinda big job for a novice. The car only has one oil pan. The back one she refered to is for the transmission,if it's automatic. Never saw a oil pan gasket leak on a nissan '96 & up.

Oil leak near oil sump

its hard to solve this one with out being present and seeing it for myself but coming from the motor trade if you have any queries or problems with your vehicle after its bin to a place of repair it is there duty to follow up or ease your worries. Take it back to the place you got it and ask if they can take a lok and show you personally where the leak is coming from or what the small leak could be. if nothing its good customer service. hope this helps

2002 Nissan Altima with an oil leak

Don't forget to change the filter with each oil change. When you change the oil, the soot from combustion sticks to the inside of the motor and does not all come out with the oil. Also there is always a little old oil here and there in the motor that does not drain out, and that will give it's color to the new oil. You can have your motor rinsed, but it is more important to change the filter regularly. Stay with one brand of oil, don't switch around. You can change the viscosity (30w/40w) from summer to winter. It's not a great idea to have thick oil in a motor if it gets below freezing outside. A rattle can be a heat shield coming loose, you'll have to have help to find it.
