Noise sounds like a belt, only makes it in park, neutral and drive


Squealing noises are either
* a worn or loose belt. replace the belt.
* an A/C belt idler bearing. Replace belt and idler.
* alternator bearing: replace the alternator.
* timing belt idler bearing(s). Replace the timing belt and all bearings (there's a full kit for this).

Inspect the belt tensioner for the following conditions:
Noise
  • If the belt squeals, the tensioner force may be insufficient. Check the belt length gauge, if the length is correct, replace the tensioner.
  • If the tensioner clatters or rattles during engine operation, there may be internal interference or wear. Replace the tensioner.
  • If the belt chirps, you may have a worn pulley or tensioner or cracks in the tensioner bas or arm. Check the mounting bolts, if they are okay, replace the tensioner.
Sticking or Seized Tensioner or Idler
  • If the tensioner does not operate smoothly or doesn't move, you may have: internal thrust surface damage/wear, internal damage/wear, or a broken spring, replace the tensioner.
Appearance
  • Inspect the tensioner arm for cracks or other damage. If the tensioner is broken, it should be replaced.
  • Look for excessive tensioner movement at idle, which can indicate internal wear, an out-of-round pulley or loose mounting bolts. Check the mounting bolts, it they are in good condition, replace the tensioner.
  • Make sure the tensioner is not tilted or misaligned. Also make sure a gap exists between the tensioner arm and base. If you notice a problem, check the mounting surface, it the surface is okay, replace the tensioner.
Belt Tracking
  • If the belt does not track properly on the pulley tracking surface, you'll need to troubleshoot the problem. Check the mounting bolts and the system alignment. Then, make sure the correct belt is being used for the vehicle. If all of these things are intact, replace the tensioner.
Belt Length Indicator
  • A belt length indicator is built into each tensioner.
  • The gauge identifies the effective operating range of the tensioner.
  • It consists of a pointer and either two or three length marks.
    • On a three-mark gauge minimum belt length, maximum belt length and ideal belt length are indicated.
    • On a two-mark gauge only minimum belt length and maximum belt length are indicated.
    • Ideal belt length on a two-mark gauge is generally half way between the minimum and the maximum.
  • When a belt wears and stretches with age the tensioner will move towards the maximum belt length to maintain proper tension.
  • As the pointer nears the maximum length mark, replace the belt.

Replace belts/how to?


Belts are the easiest thing to replace with a wrench, and a prybar.
If you have a serpentine type belt, use a 1/2" breaker bar to relieve tension on the belt, noting the routing of the belt.

If you have a v-belt, there will be an accessory such as an alternator that has adjustment bolts on it to tighten or loosen the belt.

BELT ADJUSTMENT
  1. Loosen the tension adjustment and mounting bolts.
  2. Move the pump toward or away from the engine so the belt deflects 1⁄41⁄2 in. (6–13mm) midway between the idler pulley and the pump pulley under moderate thumb pressure.
  3. Tighten the bolts and recheck the tension adjustment.
The following describes varioius types of belts and their inspection:
Belts
INSPECTION Check the drive belts for glazing, cracks, fraying, wear and tension every 6,000 miles (9,662 km). A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately. It is best to replace all drive belts at one time, as a preventive maintenance measure, during this service operation. It is recommended that the belts be replaced every 24 months or 24,000 miles (38,647 km). Belt deflection at the midpoint of the longest span between pulleys should not be more than 7⁄16 in. Average replacement mileage for a timing belt is around 60,000 miles. Many cars I have purchased had over 100,000 miles on them and had never had the belt replaced. Try to use original equipment belts or high quality after market belts when replacing. Cheap belts will not last as long and could cause serious problems if neglected(example cheap alternator belts will squeak, stretch easily, and not hold up.). I always replace all the belts when doing a job this intense. If your car has high miles it is a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time you do the timing belt.

Identify which belts need to be replaced. If you are replacing the air conditioner belt, you may need to remove the alternator belt because of the way the belts are shared on the crankshaft pulley. As a result, some mechanics recommend replacing both belts together.
  • Step 2 Loosen the lock bolt for the belt you are replacing using owner's documentation. The lock bolt will be near the belt tensioner component.
  • Step 3 Turn the adjustment bolt to change tension on the belt. When the belt is loose enough, slip it off.
  • Step 4 Use your memory or a belt routing diagram to install the new belt on all pulleys.
  • Step 5 Adjust the adjustment bolt to replace tension on the belt. Tighten the lock bolt.
  • Step 6 Make sure the belt is correctly seated on all pulleys and that the ribs fit into grooves on the pulleys.
  • Step 7 Run the engine and check for any flapping or looseness that could indicate incorrect installation.

    Replace belts as needed, check for cracks on the sides of the belts or pieces missing from belt. A good belt should last 100,000 miles. and it is a good practice to replace at 100,000 even if it looks good. REPLACE ALL BELTS as needed.

    How can i stop my AC belt from making noises when my AC is on


    The reason your belt is making a noise is either your belt is worn and needs replacing or the belt tension is out of adjustment and needs checking and adjusting.
    It is a good idea to replace it anyway specially if the belt has small cracks on the inside.

    How often do you replace a serpentine belt? I replaced it in 2007/ my last report from toyota says that it is cracking AND I assumed that it was the serpentine belt- but maybe there other belts in a car?...


    There is only one serpentine belt in your car. The belt's usually last much longer then 2 years, best thing to do is go to a parts store like Auto Zone or Parts Source and they can inspect the belt for you and show you how to inspect the belt. It's not the out side that you inspect, but the inside where the ribs are. Inspect the ribs for cracks or missing ribs, you can also maintain the belt by purchasing belt re-conditioner. The re-conditioner will keep the belt from getting to hard and cracking and give you longer life, Auto Zone can also give you the step by step instructions for you to replace your own belt if you need to.     Your 95 Accord comes with a 2.2L (4 cylinder)
    I believe the 2.2L has two belts: power steering and alternator (with or without A/C - different belt applications).
    If you are replacing belts note the routing of each one..
    . In any case these belts are not easy to replace . Each of the belts has its own manual tensioner. You should have pry bar or lever to push the tensioner back to release the tension on the belt.
    There is not a lot of room to work between the pulleys and body of car (the engine is transversely mounted). Slip the belt off any pulley you can reach. Carefully release the pry bar on the tensioner pulley. To replace belt reverse the above step. Do not pinch or crimp the new belt.

    You may also want to consider the timing belt also.
