1990 Olds silhouette at highway speeds engine stalls. shift to nuetral, wait for engine rotation to stop. restart and shift back to drive. engine runs normally for 1/2 to 2 miles then stalls again. When engine stalls there is a minor backfire sound after the stall has started. By stall I mean the engine quits. all instrument cluster indications remain normal.

Check your fuel pump. This is how they fail most of the time. If you turn the key on and dont hear the pump prime then have your fuel pressure tested.

I have a 1990 olds 88 royale 3.8 Just replaced the fuel pump, and both fuel filter. A week later coming to a stop the car dies. It's seems every time I approach a stop and get under 25 mph it dies....

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

You've got to do the obvious things, look at your spark plug wires, if you see what looks like chalky residue they are arcing replace them and your plugs. Check all vacume lines for leaks, and make sure your air filter is clean

Continous surging and stalling

Per your description, I would suspect a fuel pump issue. When the fuel pump is running the pump impeller heats up. On an older pump the impeller can begin to seize up and momentarily stops and starts. Some times it just stops and has to cool down for a couple of minutes, then is ok for a while.
To test this theory, when the engine stalls and stops, your mechanic can use a rubber mallet and hit the bottom of the gas tank, this will free the pump impeller and the car will start again.
Or, have him install a fuel pressure gauge and go for a drive. If the pressure begins to fluctuate and drop, you know the pump is causing the issue.
Good luck, let me know.

Cavalier stalls out when decelerating

If your car is equipped with a lockup torque converter in the transmission, a part called the torque converter clutch solenoid could be defective. Any transmission shop should know what to look for. Sometimes you can unplug an electrical connector on the side of the transmission and drive the car. If this takes care of the problem this verifies that the torque converter clutch solenoid is the problem. This usually will make either your check engine or service engine soon light come on when you do this however. This condition usually feels like you are trying to stop a manual transmission car without pushing in on the clutch. good luck.
