Question about Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

I have a 1992 Chevy Lumina Euro 4 door sedan with 160,000 miles on it. Recently, it has developed a persistant but intermittant problem of either dying at stop signs, or going out of gear (4 speed auto OD), or loosing all power and dying. When you restart it, it will sometimes be ok but other times stall as soon as you put it into drive. Then it will run ok for a while and perhaps die or make it home. I have replaced the ECM, Ign Module, IAC, Map sensor, O2 Sensor, all coils, Crank position sensor (twice), along with a burnt and shorted wire going from the crank sensor to the ignition module. I have put ground wires on the ECM, motor, alternator, and everywhere else I could think of. 8 years ago I put a "chip" in the ECM to enable the running of a 160° thermostat due to a heating problem along with changing the radiator and water pump. I do not want to get rid of the car but as my wife drives it to and from work daily, I am afraid she will get stalled or worse and I am now afraid of driving it. What's left? Oh, yes, it will give a error 42 on occasion, but not consistantly. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Galen

    Hi Azraelsrl,
Thanks for your time and solution, I'm afraid your correct.
Actually, I had intended on doing just that but with the cramped conditions in the engine compartment, it was not a solution I was looking forward to. I will get the car up on blocks and get out my ohm meter and magnafying glass check all of the wiring in the engine compartment.

Thanks, I'll check all of the wiring, which is going to be difficult with the cramped conditions. I'm sure your correct but I was hoping for an "easier" solution.

All your problems appear like the car is losing the electricity. You detected a shorted wire. If the short was so strong that it burnt a wire then surely it has damaged others and their connectors - melted or partially charred (that act as a short) insulations , deformed connectors.
What is most likely happening now: as the error code says you have an intermittent short in the ignition - the damaged wires are loose in their connector and they shake around; sometimes they touch and short the ignition = the engine dies, the voltage on the battery drops and the gearbox disengages.
Check every wire from the harness and test every connector.

I have a 1992 chevy lumina 3.4L engine and I had to replace the starter. I am putting the starter in and I need to know how many wires to hook up? My dad thinks there's a wire missing.

Dual overhead cam (euro)?

the small purple wire will go to the small terminal on the starter. there should be 3-4 other wires that attached to the large terminal of the starter.

I have a 4-door 1992 Chevy Lumina Euro 3.1L V6... what does it mean when you're low coolant light is on and your temp light starts to cut .. and my car is start to stop when i come to a complete stop...

You need to repair the low coolant condition before any more diagnosis. If the coolant in the radiator is low that's what the light is telling you. You may have a coolant leak. fix that first then make sure the cooling system is full. Use coolant (50/50) not water.
