I have done many of these. The service manual will tell you to remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Please don't do this, you'll just be wasting your time. I always use a 13mm open end wrench and reach under and around the crossover pipe with my right hand with the wrench and my left hand i put in between the exhaust crossover pipe and the thermostat housing(the one piece you are referring to).The left hand helps to position the end of the wrench onto the bolt and holds it on while turning it. It will take a little while to remove the bolt, as there is not much room for the wrench to move, but it works. You also may have to keep flipping the wrench over to get it back on the bolt in the limited space.

Car is running hot and I put a new thermostat in and water bump

make sure the radiator cooling fans are coming on. GM has also had major problems with the lower intake gaskets leaking on the V-6 engines. sometimes when refilling the cooling systems air lock can occur. run the engine until it warms up and then turn off and let it cool down, if coolant level goes down repeat this process two or three times. other causes could be clogged radiator, or worse case scenario blown head gaskets. also i have on occasion got bad thermostats from the parts store. the upper radiator hose will get very hot when the thermostat opens. run the engine and hold the upper hose and when the t-stat opens the hose will get hot. then when the cooling fan comes on hot air will rush from from the fans. if the fans come on and the air is cool then there is a circulation problem. t-stat, clogged radiator, low coolant, head gaskets. good luck.

Wher is my thermostat located on my 1999 chevrolet malibu

On Driver's Side Of Engine. Behind Exhaust Pipe That Runs Acrost Back Side Of Engine/Transmission. Be Careful To Not Attempt While Engine Hot Or Warm. Two 13mm Bolts Hold It on. Both Bolts To Have To Come All The Way Out, Even Though One Is Slotted. Be Sure The Thermostat Stays In Housing When Going Back Together. Good Luck

Locate and Fix a thermostat in a 2000 Malibu.

The thermostat on this car was made retarded. Its located real close the the exhaust below the air intake. If you trace your upper hose you will see it connects to a housing held in with 2 nuts over studs I think. Its just really hard to get to, you might need a flex head wrench to get to it.I've put off doing my cooling system because of this.
