SOURCE: head gasket blown
there are many was a head gasket can blow . sometimes they just leak to the outside sometimes they leak to the coolant and then it blows out your antifreeze. if you have a blown head gasket you will see it when you pull the head. and yes you should hace the head checked at a machine shop and install with a new head set never reuse a gasket .

If your just replacing the head gasket, you don't have to remove the motor. Just remove the top part of the engine.

SOURCE: 1997 cadillac head gasket blown
stay away from Cadillacs with the Northstar engines.. I owned a 97 in 2009..Had everything rebuilt at Cadillac because they all seem to eat oil before it gets to the 100 thousand mile mark..this is why Cadillac was sued....These engines burn oil to nothing for no reason with no oil leaks to be found..if thats not the problem then the radiators always malfunction..type in Cadillac recalls and you will see a long list of problems..the only thing good about these cars is it will shut off the engine before you really damage it..it will give you three warning notices on the computer to pull over..then itll shut off.. i got rid of my car when it told me to pull over because of low oil pressure and when i stopped to check it,it was at the proper oil level..and this high compression engine called Northstar HAS TO ALWAYS HAVE PREMIUM gas..anything less will indeed cause these engines to malfunction..trust me.. these arent the old carburated cadillacs..

Yes this models tend to do that, check the coolant mixture after repair, yes is a diy proyect but you at least will have basic mechanic abilities to perform this, make sure you mark all the hoses and cables when dismantling.
