Why does it die when first drivin at stop lights/signs ?

power steering puts a lot of load on the engine and if the idle compensator does not adjust it dies. a struggling pump can cause more load. when pump gets warm it works easier. Notice how when you check fluid it says hot cold.
Hope this helps Mike

1990 Chevy Van with a 350 small block that has a mind of it's own.

Try to get it running a bit to warm up the exhaust. Take a point and shoot thermometer and take the temp of the cat. If temps exceed 400 degrees I would start to suspect a plugged cat.

Engin started to idle rough at a stop sign amd quit. Was able to start it after about 20 min. but it still idled rough and died again. Had it towed home. Next Am it started right up. I held the rev a about...

Did you check for water in the spark plug wells? The spark plugs in this engine are recessed very far down, and if that area was to get water in it, there is no where for it to get out. I had that problem with my brother's MR2 once, as well as a problem with oil getting in there and causing a problem with the spark plugs. I suggest pulling out the spark plug wires, take off the shroud that covers the spark plug holes, and shop-vac or mop up any water that may have gotten in there.

Other option is water getting into some of the sensor plug wires. I would check the MAF/MAP area first.

Started Idealing rough all at once. It acts like the spark plugs my need to be changed?

Sometimes this happens when a spark plug wire goes bad or works loose. Check that all the spark plug wire connections are secure (both ends). To zero in on a possible problem cylinder, with the engine running, go around the spark plug wires and pull/disconnect each one in turn, then push it back in place. If you find one that does not make a difference to the running of the engine when you pull it, you will know that either the wire or the plug on that cylinder is bad. CAUTION: Be very careful when you handle the spark plug wires with the engine running. To avoid electric shock, do not touch the area of the lead.

You can also remove each spark plug and inspect it. If you see signs of erosion or deposits you would be due for new spark plugs. However this is something that happens gradually over time, and what you described seems more like a sudden onset.

Sometimes when you get a rough idle the check engine light will come on. Reading the error code may tell you if there is a cylinder misfire or another problem. Stores like Autozone offer free code reading.

"Rough idle" can be due to any number of other causes, problems with sensors, problems with the ignitions system, fuel supply, and so on. If you can't get to the bottom of the problem with some simple diagnostics, it may be necessary to have someone with more diagnostic experience and tools take a look at the car.
